Music : Hail to the Chief!
You have heard the slogan "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" and this CD collection of American political music from the 19th-century allows you to hear the song from the 1840 election. Other songs evidence strong feelings both for and against Andrew Jackson, "The Hunters of Kentucky" versus "King Andrew," as well as "John Tyler's Lamentation," "Filmore the Wise," "We Are Coming Father Abraham," and "Hurrah for Hayes and Honest Ways." Even more interesting are the songs about slavery and abolition ("The Grave of the Slave," "Get Off the Track," and "The Fugitive's Song"). Teachers of American history will certainly find tracks to use to supplement their textbooks. There are also instrumental tracks marches, grand marches, quick steps, gallops, a gallopade, a waltz and even a polka for various Presidential ... Read More

Music : Green
Warner Brothers took home the trophy when R.E.M. reached the end of their IRS contract, and before "Green" was even released, the murmurs of "sell-out" began. Oddly enough, the band had been consistently slouching towards the mainstream since "Radio Free Europe" first snuck onto college radio playlists and Document scored a top 40 single. When "Green" dropped with an even slicker production and (frankly) the band's sappiest single yet, "Stand," a lot of earlier fans had their worst nightmares seemingly come to life.

They could not have been more incorrect. Years down the line, it is apparent that Lifes Rich Pageant was the album where R.E.M. became a band that had a frontman as opposed to a quartet of guys who rocked. As Michael Stipe moved more to the front of the band, they became more conventional ... Read More

Music : Out of Time
The first voice you hear on R.E.M.'s second album for Warner Brothers wasn't even a member of the band. Rapper KRS-1 asks a question about what's on the radio before Michael Stipe intones "The world is collapsing around our ears." If that didn't give you notice that something was up in the R.E.M. camp, then Bill Berry taking lead on "Near Wild Heaven" and two more songs should have. Then there is the matter of the international hot single, "Losing My Religion," which feature lead instrument is a...Mandolin!?!

"Out Of Time" was the sound of a band that, having hit its stride, was no longer content just to do what was automatically expected of it. The expanded line-up (including frequent touring buddy Peter Holsapple of The dB's on guitar) both fleshed out the band's sound and pushed it away from its core jangle-pop. The second ... Read More
