Warner Brothers took home the trophy when R.E.M. reached the end of their IRS contract, and before "Green" was even released, the murmurs of "sell-out" began. Oddly enough, the band had been consistently slouching towards the mainstream since "Radio Free Europe" first snuck onto college radio playlists and Document scored a top 40 single.
