The previous reviewer either needs to get a new stereo set-up or a new pair of ears. I have listened to this release in both the regular and DVD-Audio versions and both sound just fine. The DVD-Audio version obviously being the better of the two and far cheaper than what the DVD-Audio only version is fetching right now on amazon. Well worth the money for 2 discs, in my opinion.

63.Dead Letter Office by: R.E.M.

Music : Dead Letter Office
In the liner notes, Peter Buck says that this collection is like entering a junk shop. True, except there are some real finds to be made here. R.E.M. always had a disdain for labeling "sides" to their music. Sometimes the Beatles had double-A sides for singles. During their early years, R.E.M. called their albums' sides different names. On 'Fables of the Reconstruction' it was "A Side" and "Another Side". For 'Green' it was "Air" and "Metal" sides. For 'Automatic for the People' it was "Drive" and "Ride" sides to accentuate their theme of our control on life and life's control on us, especially developed on their single "Drive".

Anyway, 'Dead Letter Office' accentuates the arbitrariness of labels while keeping in mind Peter Buck's commentary. To sort through this collection is mostly ... Read More

As a relatively young R.E.M fan, this album stands out for me and I am sure it does for other younger fans... I love every single song! Prior to this, I had albums like 'Up' and "Around the Sun,' which are different to this one. [And I want this album to be a 5-star, so i am taking the effort to raise the rating.]
Worth the $10... "Leave" "E Bow the Letter"... are at the top of my playlist.

65.Bad Day by: R.E.M.

If you like R.E.M. you've already heard and bought the title track, probably on the special edition of In Time: Best of 1988-2003. So did I. The question for me then was do the B-Sides (an arcane term now I guess) make this single worth buying. The answer is a resounding yes.

The first two songs are covers, done in a very enjoyable style reminiscent of great R.E.M. cover B-sides of the past. (Wall of Death, First We Take Manhattan, etc.) "Favorite Writer" is a great pop song featuring very sad, tragic words juxtaposed with tremendously happy music. "Out in the Country" is sung by either Mike Mills (possibly his voice has changed a little since we last heard him sing a lead?) or a guest vocalist. There are some tricky rhythmic things happening. "Adagio" is a slow orchestral instrumental that would have fit well ... Read More

66.Animal/Pretty Persuasion/Losing My Religion by: R.E.M.

"Animal" is a great song, and the live version of "Pretty Persuasion" is also a classic, but the true value of this CD is the multi-media track of "Losing my Religion" that includes a video of a live performance. The video is small and does not scale well, but is amazingly clear and is great for capturing screen shots for computer desktop. There are great close up shots of the band with limited shots of the crowd which has perplexed many R.E.M. fans in the past. Clearly the band enjoys making music and their enthusiasm is contagious. As with many live tracks, the tempo is higher. I could not, however, get this to play on other media formats and therefore do not expect to see this great gem unless you have a PC.

67.Murmur by: R.E.M.

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Murmur
Along with The B-52's, Athens Georgia had a second classic debut to foist onto the world in the 80's. "Murmur" delivered a fully formed R.E.M. sound to an unsuspecting public, heard by musical cossnoti and launching thousands of new bands in their wake. Propelled by the jangle-pop of "Radio Free Europe" and undeniable band chemistry, this is one of the top albums of that decade.

The qualities that defined the first half of R.E.M.'s career are already in full bloom on "Murmur." Peter Buck's jangley but muscular guitar propelled the sometimes bucolic sounds of the atmospheric songs. The rhythm section of Mike Mills and Bill Berry managed the odd variety of songs with the appropriate style. And on top if it all were Michael Stipe's mumbling, incoherent vocals muttering vague lyrics (with Berry adding flawless harmony). ... Read More

Music : Out of Time
The first voice you hear on R.E.M.'s second album for Warner Brothers wasn't even a member of the band. Rapper KRS-1 asks a question about what's on the radio before Michael Stipe intones "The world is collapsing around our ears." If that didn't give you notice that something was up in the R.E.M. camp, then Bill Berry taking lead on "Near Wild Heaven" and two more songs should have. Then there is the matter of the international hot single, "Losing My Religion," which feature lead instrument is a...Mandolin!?!

"Out Of Time" was the sound of a band that, having hit its stride, was no longer content just to do what was automatically expected of it. The expanded line-up (including frequent touring buddy Peter Holsapple of The dB's on guitar) both fleshed out the band's sound and pushed it away from its core jangle-pop. The second ... Read More
