Music : Supernatural Superserious Pt. 2
When it has came down to record sales, R.E.M. hasn't really had much success with getting new listeners into their driven, Alternative style. Nevertheless, it is very sad because the music they've made for so many years still rings a bell. Their latest single is no acception a great song, and a good return to the style of Michael Stipe's distinctive voice. Supernatural Superserious, the first single from the trio's latest album, Accelerate, is a really good rock song, that redifnes the Rock And Roll Hall Of Famers songs that are great to listen to. While the song isn't as strong as classics like Losing My Religion or The One I Love, it still is honestly a lot better to hear than the latest from wannabe acts like Jordin Sparks or Britney Spears. I just hope that R.E.M. can make get that new ... Read More

By 1985, I had already lived a few years absorbing this being called: R.E.M. The only reason that I was ahead of the pack was due to my move to Virginia two years prior. The Music scene in the South was very fertile {New Bands had a chance of Radio play} and the Club/Bar circuit was rich with Veterans such as Gregg Allman and Robin Trower, but was also generous to new Bands such as: The Georgia Satelites and Red Ryder, that were playing throughout the Southlands. The early 1980's DID show promise, away from the constant deluge of: "Thriller."

R.E.M. had been through my town already, and my Concert memories of the show in Virginia Beach with The Dream Syndicate as the opener in the hot summer of 1984, had already passed into the stuff of Legends. This was my Band, and the Kings ... Read More

Music : Reveal
Reveal is a quiet melodic album with a lot of fine songs that are bound to grow on you. First impression may be that only the two singles "All the Way to Reno" and "Imitation of Life" - and yes they are standouts - among the very best of their long list of hit-singles.

The opening "The Lifting" is one of the punchier songs, and a great one too.

The quiet ballad "I've Been High" is a moving song that seems get get better with everytime you listen to it.

Another favourite is "She Just Wants to Be" with its quiet acoustic start and great chorus.

Musically there seem to be a lot of inspiration from Brian Wilson - "Beat a Drum", "Summer Turns to High" and "Beachball" are very good examples of this - all fine tracks.

Though maybe not as high ... Read More

The album should of been titled "Around the Sun" by Michael Stipe. Peter Buck's guitar chimes through here and there but you can tell his heart just isn't into it. Half of the album sounds "similar" and may induce drowsiness. Also by the end you may want to throw Stipe off of his 'High Speed Train' as his lyrics which used to be sublime are now so upfront that they are annoying.

With that said Around the Sun does have some beautiful melodies buried within. After quickly burning out on Accelerate I decided one evening to re-visit this album. Wow, it's like nectar to the ears. Accelerate is produced in such a wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am manner that repeated listenings are somewhat painful. Around the Sun on the other hand washes over you like a chrysanthemum bath of notes. At it's best the ... Read More

R.E.M. ended their tenure at IRS Records with their second 5-star album, "Document." Having flirted with mainstream production with Don Geham on Lifes Rich Pageant, the switch to producer Scott Litt kept the smoother, more arena ready sound, but brought back some of the band's trademark atmosphere. "Document" also became R.E.M.'s first album to sport a hit single, the breakout "The One I Love."

Along with The Police's "Every Breath You Take," "The One I Love's" tale of obsession and paranoia marks one of the most deceptive Top 10 love songs of the 80's. It also sported one of Peter Buck's heaviest riffs. Paired with the high speed rant of "It's The End Of The World as We Know It," (which might as well have become a hit), "Document" boosted R.E.M, from the arms of its beloved cult and into the arms ... I don't think this song is as much good as songs like "The flowers of Guatemala", "Fall on me", "Orange crush", etc. There is no good melody in it.

Music : Radio Song
"Radio Song" is the first track on R.E.M.'s brilliant Out Of Time album. The song sounds different from the rest of the album, but it still works in the overall concept and it has a great appearance by the inimitable KRS-One. The single version is a remix which is not as good as the original, but still strong. Their version of the Troggs' "Love Is All Around" would not have been out of place on the album.

After twenty years of musical relevance coupled with immense popularity, it now appears as though R.E.M. might have gone full circle, returning to their earlier status as a cultish `alternative' band. Twenty-plus years of relevance indicate that they became an institution, and as such, they may have lost the ability to surprise their fans. An unfortunate side effect of this is a dwindling fan base - an interesting circumstance, since the album's underlying theme seems to be dismay at the direction of contemporary American culture, politically and otherwise. No matter. Although it is unlikely that they will renew their status as one of the `best (read most popular) bands of the decade', their musical strengths have not diminished. Under the Sun is perhaps the most carefully crafted of any R.E.M. album, which is its ... Read More

I have thousands of SACD, DVD Audio and Dualdiscs. I mean, I know perfectly when a remaster worth it. This one DEFINITELTY is not a good example of sound upgrade. Horrible mix. Horrible sound.
The others REM's editions (DVD + CD) are a very good example, but not this Dualdisc.
