As a relatively young R.E.M fan, this album stands out for me and I am sure it does for other younger fans... I love every single song! Prior to this, I had albums like 'Up' and "Around the Sun,' which are different to this one. [And I want this album to be a 5-star, so i am taking the effort to raise the rating.]
Worth the $10... "Leave" "E Bow the Letter"... are at the top of my playlist.

Let's talk about how great the guys sound, how the bass-lines come flying at you, how the guitar is turned up to 12, how Stipe's got something to say, and wants to make sure you hear it... Let's talk about how this album "rocks", how it's loaded with a sense of urgency that you feel every second. Let's talk about how at 45 RPMs and just 3 songs on each side (except side 3, which has 2 songs) it only enhances that feeling. But PLEASE, please, please, don't call it a comeback. They simply evolved, as they always have, and, hopefully, always will.

This is not "classic" REM, as I'm, as a life long fan since I got Green on vinyl oh so many years ago, not sure what that even means! Is classic REM their sound from Murmurs? From Fables? From Pageant? Or maybe Out of Time or Automatic? ... Read More

I like REM, Ihave one of thier best of CDs , but it was missing one of my faverate songs , so I bought this CD , Iwas a bit disappointed that it had a live version of Losing My Religion on it instead of the recard version , but over all a must have for any one who dosen.t want to buy a whole CD or if youare a fan of the band.

The album should of been titled "Around the Sun" by Michael Stipe. Peter Buck's guitar chimes through here and there but you can tell his heart just isn't into it. Half of the album sounds "similar" and may induce drowsiness. Also by the end you may want to throw Stipe off of his 'High Speed Train' as his lyrics which used to be sublime are now so upfront that they are annoying.

With that said Around the Sun does have some beautiful melodies buried within. After quickly burning out on Accelerate I decided one evening to re-visit this album. Wow, it's like nectar to the ears. Accelerate is produced in such a wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am manner that repeated listenings are somewhat painful. Around the Sun on the other hand washes over you like a chrysanthemum bath of notes. At it's best the ... Read More

Music : Chronic Town
This litle 5 song EP was the high-water mark for an college/alternative-rock band from Athens, Georgia. Murmur, the first LP, was nearly as good. But everything after that, when lead singer Michael Stipe actually started using coherent lyrics as a concession to "audience accessibility, constituted moves down the ladder in direct correspondence to chronological order. This is not to saw that REM didn't produce some good Southern Pop-Rock through the Out of Time LP, but rather that the quality steadily declined and washed out completely after that.

Gardening at Night and 1,000,000 are simply infectious, and who cares about understanding the "lyrics." Indeed, I believe that Stipe is listed as "lead vocal instrument" on the cover. And this fairly characterizes what he was doing with his voice and the ... Read More
