Excellent use of high-rez and surround. This brought back high-school memories in crisp, clear, surround-sound goodness. Despite it being the band's major "hit" record, this is one of my favorites of many memorable releases. Absolutely worth adding to your R.E.M. collection, as the surround mix is done intelligently without being too "in your face". A+

a lot of these reviews are wrong. all of these dvd+a's can be ripped to your ipod/zune. and the sound is not the same as the cd's you've been listening to all these years. the mix on monster is completely different and new. and this is from listening on the zune with earphones. i just wanted to let people who are on the fence about getting these.

as i was on the fence as well due to the fact that i don't have a dvd+a player and the only new feature added is worthless to me. not now. now i can have newly mixed and mastered sound for all the r.e.m. warner albums. which were needing it. and it's not the crappy loud remastering they're doing nowadays either.

I actually owned every R.E.M. album but Document until I finally broke down. I had thought the two strongest songs would be "The One I Love" and "It's The End of The World...." Since neither of those songs are rated highly by me, I figured I would be disappointed by this album. Was I ever wrong! There are some great songs here. "Exhuming McCarthy" and "King of Birds" are personal favorites. It's definitely not up to par with what came before it, and some of what came after it, but it's definitely a worthy part of their catalogue.

This is truly a soundtrack because it contains many soundbites from the movie. The majority of the album is R.E.M., some actual songs by Andy Kaufman and of course the Mighty Mouse Theme.

There was a time when REM was genius. There was a time. It was a long time ago. Now, there are these three guys...trying to sound like REM. Some great things age well (fine scotch, Clint Eastwood Westerns), some don't. Where did you go, Bill Berry? Who knew YOU were what made REM, REM? Sigh...

I suspect that most people are going to discover this album, like I did, trying to complete collections of songs by their favorite artists. I was a Cracker and Sparklehorse fan which led me to this album. Now arguably I am a much bigger Vic Chesnutt fan than I am of either of those bands. In fact the Cracker and Sparklehorse covers on this album aren't all that great. I give this album 4 stars because the songs are all VC classics and should be heard by those unfamiliar with his work, but inevitably the covers are of hit-and-miss quality. On the weak side are the Hootie cover of "Gravity of the Situation", and the Smashing Pumpkins cover of "Sad Peter Pan", which really pale to the original upon repeated listening to both. Those are two VC classics that probably no one could cover successfully. On a positive ... Read More

The single disc version of this CD is probably a perfect retro pop CD. The two disc version is icing on the cake. Probably the most inspirational core set of material from any modern band coming out of the post punk, new wave / MTV era in the eighties. The newer material is different but just as good. If you have nothing, this is probably the best place to start.

I had bought this album with great hopes. For one, I had heard some really wonderful comments about the depth and quality of Sam Phillips' music. Secondly, I know that the producer of this album (T Bone Burnett) can work some powerful magic to make music artists shine no matter what the material. Sadly, at least for this album, all the talent and production magic cannot change the fact that this is an album that is pretty much filled with anger over a relationship gone wrong.

While this sort of inspiration can come up with some great art, in this case it just did not click. There is just too much vitriol in these songs and the wordplay seems rather pushed around rather than seamless. There are times when a bit of distance is called for, and I wish that this album could have benefited from some time and ... Read More
