This collection should be called "R.E.M.: The Ballads 1988-2003." Almost all of the selections are slow songs, and even though the songs themselves are mostly great (except for some mediocre recent material like "The Great Beyond" and "All the Way to Reno"), the band comes off as wimpy balladeers when they were much, much more than that. Where's "Bittersweet Me"? Where's "Lotus"? If not for the inclusion of "Orange Crush" and "Bad Day," you might think that R.E.M. just completely forgot how to rock out after they signed to Warners. Combined with the awkward track sequencing, it makes for a frustrating listen. The bonus disc includes some cool stuff, but probably not a lot that a dedicated fan hasn't heard before. The album should of been titled "Around the Sun" by Michael Stipe. Peter Buck's guitar chimes through here and there but you can tell his heart just isn't into it. Half of the album sounds "similar" and may induce drowsiness. Also by the end you may want to throw Stipe off of his 'High Speed Train' as his lyrics which used to be sublime are now so upfront that they are annoying. With that said Around the Sun does have some beautiful melodies buried within. After quickly burning out on Accelerate I decided one evening to re-visit this album. Wow, it's like nectar to the ears. "Supernatural Superserious" is the token hit, and "Hollow Man" is decent. The rest of the cd is just noise, and the dvd is utterly worthless. Jeez, I thought the dvd would at least have some concert footage or something, but I guess it's just there to justify a higher price!

REM is a full of view first impression music, their lyrics touch our soul in their high worked melodies. As well knowed by everybody. Automatic for the People just say how weak is our passage way and how come becarefull we have to be with.

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Everything everyone else has said. But, I do have to add this one: The song Find the River ALONE could easily make this their best record. I lack the words.

I must have loaned this CD to someone. I have all of REM's major releases, many of the hits and b-sides, a few boot legs, etc. I saw REM at a 400 seat venu and a 30,000 seat venu and a few in between. I know this album is a bit over produced considering murmur and reckoning, but I still love this album.
