Music : Everybody Hurts
R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" single ranks among the band's more esoteric releases. Except for the the title track, taken directly from the album AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE, the single's songs are a bit more experimental than on most R.E.M. singles.

"Everybody Hurts" is a beautiful track, but should be taken in moderation lest its compassionate lyrics start to seem too sugary. In writing this song, it's almost as if they have created a balm for any depressing moment in life.

"Star Me Kitten (demo)" is a rather rough but still interesting version of one the most unusual songs on AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE. For those who enjoyed the album version, this demo gives a perfect view of the song's genesis.

"Losing My Religion (live)" is a minimalistic rendition of the song ... Read More

200.I'll Take the Rain by: R.E.M.
November 19, 2001

Music : I'll Take the Rain
This import version of R.E.M.'s "I'll Take the Rain" single contains the standout track from their 2001 album REVEAL, as well as "32 Chord Song" (a version of "Summer Turns to High"). Placing the CD in a computer CD-ROM drive allows one to watch the concert footage of "I've Been High".

"I'll Take the Rain" was one of the most moving songs on REVEAL. While it has drawn criticism because Michael Stipe's vocal technique is considerably weaker than 10 - 20 years ago, I find this one of R.E.M.'s best songs of late. "32 Chord Song" is an idiosyncratic version of REVEAL's "Summer Turns to High" that sounds something like a carnival song. It seems that Stipe's vocals are the same as on the album, but the guitar has been replaced and there are new percussion elements. It's not a very entertaining ... Read More
