This CD is one of the better ones for fight songs. They sound like you'd hear them on game day. Another CD by the Univ of Michigan band has a concert band sound instead of marching band sound, so I like this one better. The only thing keeping it from being 5 stars for me is a few missing songs, and I'd truly would like to hear each song played by that school's own band not a different band.

Peter Buck's opening notes on the third R.E.M. album struck the mood; ominous and cutting. "Feeling Gravity's Pull" chucked the murky atmosphere of Murmur and the poppy jangle so predominant on Reckoning, replacing it with a haunting crush of sound. "Fables of The Reconstruction" was R.E.M.'s darkest album to date and spoke of tensions the band was having at the time. It's also, by contrast, it's also their most southern.

Songs like the horn-heavy "Can't Get There From Here" (ever ask for directions in rural Georgia?), "Auctioneer (Another Engine)," and "Driver Eight" - a train song for heaven's sake - dig into the myth of the deep south, and legendary folk producer Joe Boyd highlights the right elements. Stipe had become a more forceful singer by now, and more of the (as usual) ... Read More

Like a lot of music fans, I have turned completely back to vinyl, and the versions of this GREAT album that I have found are all messed up. I want Rhino to get the rights from IRS to allow them to do a great 180g pressing as they have done for some other great '80's records, with the fantastic "Pleased to Meet Me" by the Replacements as an example.

I am not, nor ever was a huge REM fan, but I have always loved this album. "Fall on Me" unlike a lot of '80's music still sounds as good to me today as it did as a sophmore in college. As I have gotten older and sadly realized that the music from my generation paled in comparison to the one just before us, I take some consolation in the fact that we have a few winners. Such as this album, Murmur, War and the Joshua Tree. But let's be honest; ... Read More

CD arrived on time, in perfect condition. Except for a scratch on the CD case. I will make sure I recommend you to all my family and friends. JUST KIDDING!

I hated this album the day it came out. HATED it. Listened to it yesterday in order to test my resilience to all things relevant and to my suprise I loved it. All of those selling this for a penny (Im talking to you used CD store owners with a boatload of copies of this CD)-- I ould suggest just handing them out in any parking lot you may happen to find yourself in. Going to get groceries? --see that kid over there? He doesnt have a copy of REMs Monster....

R.E.M.'s music is among the most influential of all-time. Their hits like 'Orange Crush' and 'Losing My Religion' still get played on FM radio stations everyday.

But, unfortunately, their early years are overlooked for their more famous Warner Bros. recordings. And that's a real shame, because R.E.M.'s best music came from their years on the IRS label, which is now owned by Capitol.

This set, 'Eponymous' is the set to own if you are just starting your R.E.M. collection. It's got all of the major early IRS recordings from 1983-1988. I can't get enough of songs like 'Radio Free Europe,' 'The One I Love' and 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It,' all of which appear on this set.

And, Capitol gets tons of credit for remastering all of these classics. In translation, the sound quality ... Read More

The first time I dropped this into my car player, I just didn't have the patience to listen to the whole thing. I'm hip to the notion that if I want IRS era stuff, I play those discs. Of course, the, "big time", excursion followed, so I have those discs to play when I want. "UP", on the other hand is a whole 'nuther thing.

The way it works for me is to play it on my home system while I'm occupied with something like cleaning up. Here is where you must bring to the table two things--you must really like Michael Stipe's voice, and you have to enjoy aural wallpaper once in a while.

I will be the first to warn you that this album is not for everyone...not even for all R.E.M. fans. But, if you let it, it just might creep into your good graces.

Reveal is a quiet melodic album with a lot of fine songs that are bound to grow on you. First impression may be that only the two singles "All the Way to Reno" and "Imitation of Life" - and yes they are standouts - among the very best of their long list of hit-singles.

The opening "The Lifting" is one of the punchier songs, and a great one too.

The quiet ballad "I've Been High" is a moving song that seems get get better with everytime you listen to it.

Another favourite is "She Just Wants to Be" with its quiet acoustic start and great chorus.

Musically there seem to be a lot of inspiration from Brian Wilson - "Beat a Drum", "Summer Turns to High" and "Beachball" are very good examples of this - all fine tracks.

Though maybe not as high-profiled as classics like "Life's Rich Pageant" ... Read More

Wow, where's the energy? It lacks on this performance, the best part is the makeup on Stipe, I hear they have a new album out. We'll see if they survive.

REM kind of lost the plot after "Automatic For The People" with their next release "Monster". The album was an attempt to go back to a more hard rocking sound, but it was a major disappointment to my ears. I bought it and ended up selling it back to a used CD store. By the time of this album's release REM's time at the top of the charts had passed and album sales would steadily decline from then on. "New Adventures" was an album entirely written on the road during the "Monster" tour. Some of the songs were recorded in one take and the album has an overall stripped down feel to it. I think this is a decent REM release, not up there with their best, but also far from their worst. It is a rather long album consisting of 14 tracks. I believe that pairing down some of the filler might have made this a tighter collection and not have the rather bloated ... Read More

The main reason to get this CD was to pick up the long out-of-print "Chronic Town" EP. It was the first time R.E.M. found focus and made a studio album (released on the old IRS label in 1982). Their signature sound had already taken root, with Michael Stipe's mumbled vocals and Peter Buck's jangley guitars in full swing for "Gardening at Night" and "Wolves Lower." Within a year, they had caught the ears of college radio types with Murmur.

After that, you get a yard sale's pickings for B-Sides and previously unreleased songs. Some are ideas that eventually become other songs ("Burning Down"), free-wheeling covers (Aerosmith's Toys in the Attic) and a few drunken accidents (a babbling take on Roger Miller's "King of The Road"). Their love of The Velvet Underground is exposed by three covers, and a tribute to their buddies in Pylon leads the CD.
