Compared to the murky, modern sound of Murmur, this, R.E.M.'s second album, was a more straight-forward approach, something of a folk rock album with its jangly guitar-driven sound. Just as with Murmur, the lyrics draw repeated listening to fathom their meaning, as with "7 Chinese Brothers" (..."Seven Chinese brothers swallowing the ocean..."), and they inspire, as with "Letter Never Sent" (..."Heaven is yours, heaven is yours, heaven is yours where I may live...". But the lyrics are more focused, some like stories, even with a little country thrown in, as in "So. Central Rain" and "Don't Go Back to Rockville," which perhaps hinted at the direction of the next album, "Fables of the Reconstruction." Stipe's delivery is still understated, not the clearly enunciated rendering that would begin ... Read More

Like a lot of music fans, I have turned completely back to vinyl, and the versions of this GREAT album that I have found are all messed up. I want Rhino to get the rights from IRS to allow them to do a great 180g pressing as they have done for some other great '80's records, with the fantastic "Pleased to Meet Me" by the Replacements as an example.

I am not, nor ever was a huge REM fan, but I have always loved this album. "Fall on Me" unlike a lot of '80's music still sounds as good to me today as it did as a sophmore in college. As I have gotten older and sadly realized that the music from my generation paled in comparison to the one just before us, I take some consolation in the fact that we have a few winners. Such as this album, Murmur, War and the Joshua Tree. But let's be honest; ... Read More

"Crush with Eyeliner" is a classic R.E.M. song about obsessing over a girl Stipe refers to as a "sad tomato." This is a great dance song with an underground beat that is equally at ease dancing in your living room alone or having 100 people in a club.

"Crush with Eyeliner" is a hot song by itself, but true R.E.M. fans know the energy, unexpectedness and new sounds that the band puts forth live; It is this that gives this CD its true value. This CD has live performaces of "Me in Honey" and "Fall on Me" which are more up tempo than the earlier recorded versions. Stipe's voice and the clarity of the music is amazing. "Finest Worksong" is still excellent, but sounds a little more like the album version (not the horn remix). Over all this is an excellent CD, especially if you are interested in the live tracks, ... The first time I dropped this into my car player, I just didn't have the patience to listen to the whole thing. I'm hip to the notion that if I want IRS era stuff, I play those discs. Of course, the, "big time", excursion followed, so I have those discs to play when I want. "UP", on the other hand is a whole 'nuther thing.

The way it works for me is to play it on my home system while I'm occupied with something like cleaning up. Here is where you must bring to the table two things--you must really like Michael Stipe's voice, and you have to enjoy aural wallpaper once in a while.

I will be the first to warn you that this album is not for everyone...not even for all R.E.M. fans. But, if you let it, it just might creep into your good graces.
