To anyone who has ever worked long into the night, this strong will strike a touching and beautiful chord.

Melancholy moodyness in a quiet world.

A beautiful anthem.

Compared to the murky, modern sound of Murmur, this, R.E.M.'s second album, was a more straight-forward approach, something of a folk rock album with its jangly guitar-driven sound. Just as with Murmur, the lyrics draw repeated listening to fathom their meaning, as with "7 Chinese Brothers" (..."Seven Chinese brothers swallowing the ocean..."), and they inspire, as with "Letter Never Sent" (..."Heaven is yours, heaven is yours, heaven is yours where I may live...". But the lyrics are more focused, some like stories, even with a little country thrown in, as in "So. Central Rain" and "Don't Go Back to Rockville," which perhaps hinted at the direction of the next album, "Fables of the Reconstruction." Stipe's delivery is still understated, not the clearly enunciated rendering that would begin ... Read More

When I first bought Reveal, I didn't really like it, and so let it sit unplayed for a long, long time. Then one time, I found that I was beginning to grow tired of the hard-rock music that I listen to so much, and I tried to think of the CD that I hadn't listened to in the longest while. Reveal immediately came to mind. So I popped it in my player, and discovered that I, all of a sudden, immensely enjoyed the beautiful sounds that were coming out of my speakers. All I did for the next few days was play the album over and over, and then show my friends (who never really have liked REM) what a band like REM was capable of. It then turned out that one of my friends had discovered "Losing my Religion" and instantly liked REM, and the other friend I showed it to remains a skeptic about REM, but loved the sounds ... "What's the Frequency Kenneth?" is the one truly essential song from "Monster," and probably the only one that most casual fans will want. And, with this single, you also get great live versions of "Man on the Moon" and "Everybody Hurts" from "Automatic for the People" - as well as really cool cover art. This is what a CD-single should be.

Music : Nightswimming
Nightswimming is a beautiful song from Automatic. However, the highlight of this single are the other three songs, which were recorded live at Mountain Stage (West Virginia). You get the wonderful accoustic versions of World Leader Pretend, Belong (more distinct than the version found on the Radio Song single), and Low. These would have made good bonus songs for Automatic for the People.
