Music : Murmur
Along with The B-52's, Athens Georgia had a second classic debut to foist onto the world in the 80's. "Murmur" delivered a fully formed R.E.M. sound to an unsuspecting public, heard by musical cossnoti and launching thousands of new bands in their wake. Propelled by the jangle-pop of "Radio Free Europe" and undeniable band chemistry, this is one of the top albums of that decade.

The qualities that defined the first half of R.E.M.'s career are already in full bloom on "Murmur." Peter Buck's jangley but muscular guitar propelled the sometimes bucolic sounds of the atmospheric songs. The rhythm section of Mike Mills and Bill Berry managed the odd variety of songs with the appropriate style. And on top if it all were Michael Stipe's mumbling, incoherent vocals muttering vague lyrics ... Read More

Wow, I just bought this CD and I was surprised to see how poorly reviewed it was. Actually, that is the primary reason for my participation in this review... to offer a positive and encouraging reason to purchase this compact disc. I found the music to be refreshing and beautiful and, despite what other reviews have said, found the musicians to be quite talented. It's a good CD to relax to, have a dinner party to, et cetera. It's not REM, don't expect to hear REM. It is, however, a string quartet who brings a refreshing twist to most of REM's popular songs.

A lot of people dislike R.E.M. because of Michael's voice, but, to me, it (along with the laid-back southern-style instruments) is the band's heartbeat. Its soothing, honest beauty is unique and charmi--... okay, I think I made the point well enough. I love R.E.M.

1) Strange Currencies. To me, the lyrics are that of a direct relationship song... and mixed with the soft playing, it's soul nourishment. "I need a chance, a 2nd chance, a 3rd chance, a 4th chance, a word, a signal, a nod, a little breath, just to fool myself, just to catch myself, to make it real". The humanity of those words is beautiful.

2, 3) Drive (Live) and Funtime (Live). Both seem more light-hearted than usual R.E.M., overall... they're somewhat catchy, and the live atmosphere kicks it up a notch (bam!). Throw ... Read More

"Adventures in Hi-Fi" is one of those R.E.M. records that seems to have gotten away {Not so good critical reviews, low sales}.

Well, if I can remember properly, there were at least 4 of these EP/Single CD's issued overseas {Mine is from Japan} to promote some singles activity from: "Adventures". This is: "Bittersweet Me", it contains the title cut and three more gems. As an EP it is only 18 minutes in length, but it is a pretty cool 18 minutes. "Undertow" is a live version from Atlanta, that was used in the Band's film: "Road Movie" that was released in 1996. "New Test Leper" is from a Seattle Studio, and had a very limited life as a Radio promo CD, that is more than impossible to find today. "Leper" is even better than the original, in this acoustic version.
But, I may be a bit biased, ... Read More

"Tongue", originally from "Monster", is a great song, although very different. Micheal Stipe sings this in a very high-pitched voice. It starts and finishes sweet, but sour lyrics and a callous guitar solo make it a near perfect balance.
