The theme of this album is songs of social consciousness, which means that the compiler was looking for historical relevence, rather than overall good tunes. But there are at least two songs here that any fan of the 19th century popular song must have: "The Song of the Red Man," by Henry Clay Work, and "The Hand that Holds the Bread" by Root. Work's piece is simple, but driving and compelling, like all his best songs. The song by Root is just another fine, rousing melody by this exellent pop composer. Performance-wise, the soloists are a mixed bag, but they are sincere, and the chorus is superb throughout.

Music : Everybody Hurts
R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" single ranks among the band's more esoteric releases. Except for the the title track, taken directly from the album AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE, the single's songs are a bit more experimental than on most R.E.M. singles.

"Everybody Hurts" is a beautiful track, but should be taken in moderation lest its compassionate lyrics start to seem too sugary. In writing this song, it's almost as if they have created a balm for any depressing moment in life.

"Star Me Kitten (demo)" is a rather rough but still interesting version of one the most unusual songs on AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE. For those who enjoyed the album version, this demo gives a perfect view of the song's genesis.

"Losing My Religion (live)" is a minimalistic rendition of the song ... Read More

I have to admit that I never really listen to the rest of this disc, I bought it for Elecrolight, and can listen to it all night long. This song alone can capture the feelings of a broken heart. The lyrics wrap around Stipe's voice, entering that little spot that no-one ever wants to expose to anyone. It captues the feelins of his bigger hits like evrybody hurts, but yet can lull you to sleep. The rest of this disc may be bunk, but it's worth it for this song alone.

When it has came down to record sales, R.E.M. hasn't really had much success with getting new listeners into their driven, Alternative style. Nevertheless, it is very sad because the music they've made for so many years still rings a bell. Their latest single is no acception a great song, and a good return to the style of Michael Stipe's distinctive voice. Supernatural Superserious, the first single from the trio's latest album, Accelerate, is a really good rock song, that redifnes the Rock And Roll Hall Of Famers songs that are great to listen to. While the song isn't as strong as classics like Losing My Religion or The One I Love, it still is honestly a lot better to hear than the latest from wannabe acts like Jordin Sparks or Britney Spears. I just hope that R.E.M. can make get that new perspective ... Read More

125.Chronic Town by: R.E.M.

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Chronic Town
This litle 5 song EP was the high-water mark for an college/alternative-rock band from Athens, Georgia. Murmur, the first LP, was nearly as good. But everything after that, when lead singer Michael Stipe actually started using coherent lyrics as a concession to "audience accessibility, constituted moves down the ladder in direct correspondence to chronological order. This is not to saw that REM didn't produce some good Southern Pop-Rock through the Out of Time LP, but rather that the quality steadily declined and washed out completely after that.

Gardening at Night and 1,000,000 are simply infectious, and who cares about understanding the "lyrics." Indeed, I believe that Stipe is listed as "lead vocal instrument" on the cover. And this fairly characterizes what he was doing with his voice ... Read More

127.Suspicion by: R.E.M.
July 05, 1999
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : Suspicion
In its singles from "Monster," "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" and "Up," R.E.M. settled back into a pattern of releasing live tunes as B-sides instead of unreleased tracks. These are decent; "Electrolite" might be better live than in the studio, and "Man on the Moon" always is a good listen, though some listeners may have heard many live versions of it already. "Suspicion" isn't one of the best tracks from "Up," though, and its release as a single perhaps shows the weakness of the album it came from. This single is good for completists, but unnecessary for everyone else.

Music : Starship - Greatest Hits
I think this isn't a great compilation album. Heck, it ISN'T a compilation album. This isn't a Starship album. Pete Sears, Craig Chaquico, Grace Slick and Donny Baldwin all are not involved. So that just leaves Mickey Thomas out of the original 1985-1992 Starship cast.

So, either way you look at it, this isn't a Starship album. I see it as a Mickey Thomas solo album. While yes, it is released under the Starship name, it isn't a terrible record.

Mickey still sounds great, and he is 59 years old as of 2008. This was recorded over the last couple of years, so it's not really fair to criticize it.

Meanwhile, though, the title is a real misunderstanding. For Starship fans expecting the originals of songs such as 'We Built This City' and 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now.'
