Music : Document (DVD-Audio)

R.E.M. ended their tenure at IRS Records with their second 5-star album, "Document." Having flirted with mainstream production with Don Geham on Lifes Rich Pageant, the switch to producer Scott Litt kept the smoother, more arena ready sound, but brought back some of the band's trademark atmosphere. "Document" also became R.E.M.'s first album to sport a hit single, the breakout "The One I Love."

Along with The Police's "Every Breath You Take," "The One I Love's" tale of obsession and paranoia marks one of the most deceptive Top 10 love songs of the 80's. It also sported one of Peter Buck's heaviest riffs. Paired with the high speed rant of "It's The End Of The World as We Know It," (which might as well have become a hit), "Document" boosted R.E.M, from the arms of its beloved cult ... Read More

I like REM, Ihave one of thier best of CDs , but it was missing one of my faverate songs , so I bought this CD , Iwas a bit disappointed that it had a live version of Losing My Religion on it instead of the recard version , but over all a must have for any one who dosen.t want to buy a whole CD or if youare a fan of the band.

This disc is pure, well, as the title indicates, soul. Never was a title more fiting than "Reggae Got Soul" that encapsulates the music. The title track "Reggae Got Soul" is a monster. The opeing track,"Rasta Man" has that slow churning, steadly chugging, rock steady beat that is the backdrop to the coolest smoky vocals and chorus you'll ever here. Throw in some horns to go with the syncopated beat and you have a reggae classic. This is one of my all time fave songs that I never get tired of. It is one of those songs that you can push the repeat button and just let it rip three or four times in a row. Toots Hibbert is such a great singer that I put him in the same category as, say, Otis Redding. I make the Otis Redding comparison because of their gritty , heart felt vocals that transcend a recording and comes ... Read More

At this point we are left to wonder if this is a legitimate compilation or some knock-off cover-band's handiwork. With all the so-called ''tribute' albums for fairly newcomers would you trust this without knowing the artists? I wouldn't.

I have provided a scan of the back cover so that you can see the artists and that this is in fact a legitimate compilation featuring the 'real' artists responsible for these songs.

I often look at bands today from alternative rock, and they just really don't seem to be there anymore. Even the traditional ones don't have that much airplay or reflection right now. R.E.M. has constantly been placed under that list, especially after the departure of their drummer Bill Berry. Yet, the group from Athens still continues to shine again & again. Their latest single, Leaving New York is a very down to Earth mellow rock song, that really is one of their best tracks in quite awhile. The song has a very meaningful memory of dedication and what so many people have done in our lives, is move on to vast other areas. This happens to be a great song, and shouldn't put R.E.M. down for the count. Their time is still going on.

Music : Got Live (If You Want It)
This is a really cool CD containing artist's I am extremely familiar with - Shawn Mullins, Kevin Kinney, R.E.M., Guadalcanal Diary, but also has some up and coming artist's I have now become a fan of - Josh Joplin, Dayroom, Memory-Dean, Soul Miners Daughter, and Deacon Brody. It's a must to check out the Kevin Kinney track, "Chico and Maria" - his story telling is absolutely amazing and mesmorizing, and he is an incredible performer. Also, there is a hidden track by Josh Joplin and Shawn Mullins called "I've Changed" that is worth the price of the CD itself....well, maybe along with the R.E.M. song "Country Feedback", which is a live version of one of my favorite songs from the group. All and All, I love this album because of the diversity - it never grows stale in my CD player!
