Music : Out of Time
The first voice you hear on R.E.M.'s second album for Warner Brothers wasn't even a member of the band. Rapper KRS-1 asks a question about what's on the radio before Michael Stipe intones "The world is collapsing around our ears." If that didn't give you notice that something was up in the R.E.M. camp, then Bill Berry taking lead on "Near Wild Heaven" and two more songs should have. Then there is the matter of the international hot single, "Losing My Religion," which feature lead instrument is a...Mandolin!?!

"Out Of Time" was the sound of a band that, having hit its stride, was no longer content just to do what was automatically expected of it. The expanded line-up (including frequent touring buddy Peter Holsapple of The dB's on guitar) both fleshed out the band's sound and pushed ... Read More

Well, Lotus is definitely a great REM song. It features those typically obscure lyrics, and every time I hear it, the song manages to create a strange, desperate feeling in me. Which does not mean that it's depressing, it's simply very touching. Musically, Lotus is not typical for REM; it's probably the funkiest song they ever recorded. Surfing the gauges, the other track on this cd, is really much fun... I can fully recommend this single.

Music : Fables of the Reconstruction
Peter Buck's opening notes on the third R.E.M. album struck the mood; ominous and cutting. "Feeling Gravity's Pull" chucked the murky atmosphere of Murmur and the poppy jangle so predominant on Reckoning, replacing it with a haunting crush of sound. "Fables of The Reconstruction" was R.E.M.'s darkest album to date and spoke of tensions the band was having at the time. It's also, by contrast, it's also their most southern.

Songs like the horn-heavy "Can't Get There From Here" (ever ask for directions in rural Georgia?), "Auctioneer (Another Engine)," and "Driver Eight" - a train song for heaven's sake - dig into the myth of the deep south, and legendary folk producer Joe Boyd highlights the right elements. Stipe had become a more forceful singer by now, and more of the (as usual) oblique lyrics ... Read More

CD arrived on time, in perfect condition. Except for a scratch on the CD case. I will make sure I recommend you to all my family and friends. JUST KIDDING!

I hated this album the day it came out. HATED it. Listened to it yesterday in order to test my resilience to all things relevant and to my suprise I loved it. All of those selling this for a penny (Im talking to you used CD store owners with a boatload of copies of this CD)-- I ould suggest just handing them out in any parking lot you may happen to find yourself in. Going to get groceries? --see that kid over there? He doesnt have a copy of REMs Monster....

Music : Document
R.E.M. ended their tenure at IRS Records with their second 5-star album, "Document." Having flirted with mainstream production with Don Geham on Lifes Rich Pageant, the switch to producer Scott Litt kept the smoother, more arena ready sound, but brought back some of the band's trademark atmosphere. "Document" also became R.E.M.'s first album to sport a hit single, the breakout "The One I Love."

Along with The Police's "Every Breath You Take," "The One I Love's" tale of obsession and paranoia marks one of the most deceptive Top 10 love songs of the 80's. It also sported one of Peter Buck's heaviest riffs. Paired with the high speed rant of "It's The End Of The World as We Know It," (which might as well have become a hit), "Document" boosted R.E.M, from the arms of its beloved cult and into the arms of the mainstream. ... REM kind of lost the plot after "Automatic For The People" with their next release "Monster". The album was an attempt to go back to a more hard rocking sound, but it was a major disappointment to my ears. I bought it and ended up selling it back to a used CD store. By the time of this album's release REM's time at the top of the charts had passed and album sales would steadily decline from then on. "New Adventures" was an album entirely written on the road during the "Monster" tour. Some of the songs were recorded in one take and the album has an overall stripped down feel to it. I think this is a decent REM release, not up there with their best, but also far from their worst. It is a rather long album consisting of 14 tracks. I believe that pairing down some of the filler might have made this a tighter collection and not ... Read More

Music : Great Beyond
This is an amazing, catchy, beautiful, wondrous, powerful song. Michael Stipe's voice has never sounded stronger. The arrangement is terrific. The chorus is haunting, tearful, especially if you juxtapose it with the tragedy of Andy Kaufman. Listening to this song wants me to see Jim Carrey's best performance again.
