Not too many bands over the last forty years or so have come out of the gate with an introductory LP with such a lasting impact as: "Murmur".
This record created something entirely different in 1983, it was rock as much as it was pop, and it wasn't even close to anything else released during the early eighties. The biggest kicker to the whole deal was that R.E.M. came from a small town in Georgia.

How in the world, can an album fit in between Molly Hatchet & Thriller? How can mumbled/mixed down vocals and chiming Rickenbacker guitars hold their own next to moonwalking and 27 minute jams of: "Whipping Post?" Well, R.E.M. was about unknown to everyone north of Richmond, Virginia and south of Jacksonville, Florida in early 1983, when IRS thrust this force onto a world ... Read More

Accelerate can be one of those albums which fans, upset with R.E.M.'s last few releases, may judge too highly, throwing out words like comeback just to describe a vague adult-rock, easy going consistency in a way which almost insults some of their finer intricacies.

Along with The B-52's, Athens Georgia had a second classic debut to foist onto the world in the 80's. "Murmur" delivered a fully formed R.E.M. sound to an unsuspecting public, heard by musical cossnoti and launching thousands of new bands in their wake. Propelled by the jangle-pop of "Radio Free Europe" and undeniable band chemistry, this is one of the top albums of that decade.

The qualities that defined the first half of R.E.M.'s career are already in full bloom on "Murmur." Peter Buck's jangley but muscular guitar propelled the sometimes bucolic sounds of the atmospheric songs. The rhythm section of Mike Mills and Bill Berry managed the odd variety of songs with the appropriate style. And on top if it all were Michael Stipe's mumbling, incoherent vocals muttering vague lyrics (with Berry adding flawless ... Read More

The first voice you hear on R.E.M.'s second album for Warner Brothers wasn't even a member of the band. Rapper KRS-1 asks a question about what's on the radio before Michael Stipe intones "The world is collapsing around our ears." If that didn't give you notice that something was up in the R.E.M. camp, then Bill Berry taking lead on "Near Wild Heaven" and two more songs should have. Then there is the matter of the international hot single, "Losing My Religion," which feature lead instrument is a...Mandolin!?!

"Out Of Time" was the sound of a band that, having hit its stride, was no longer content just to do what was automatically expected of it. The expanded line-up (including frequent touring buddy Peter Holsapple of The dB's on guitar) both fleshed out the band's sound and pushed it away from its core jangle-pop. ... Read More

Compared to the murky, modern sound of Murmur, this, R.E.M.'s second album, was a more straight-forward approach, something of a folk rock album with its jangly guitar-driven sound. Just as with Murmur, the lyrics draw repeated listening to fathom their meaning, as with "7 Chinese Brothers" (..."Seven Chinese brothers swallowing the ocean..."), and they inspire, as with "Letter Never Sent" (..."Heaven is yours, heaven is yours, heaven is yours where I may live...". But the lyrics are more focused, some like stories, even with a little country thrown in, as in "So. Central Rain" and "Don't Go Back to Rockville," which perhaps hinted at the direction of the next album, "Fables of the Reconstruction." Stipe's delivery is still understated, not the clearly enunciated rendering that would begin with the album Document, but it's part of ... Read More

I noticed all the complaints on sound. So my 5-star rating is really for an import, "The Best of R.E.M." With 16 songs the songlist is representative of R.E.M.'s early years, though there are no rarities on it. It starts with "Chronic Town," then proceeds with 3 songs from each album chronologically from "Murmur" through "Document." The sound quality is fine, although a little lower than most newer CDs, so you have to turn it up a little. Here's the excellent song selection:

Carnival of Sorts
Radio Free Europe
Perfect Circle
Talk About the Passion
So. Central Rain
(Don't Go Back To) Rockville
Pretty Persuasion
Green Grow the Rushes
Can't Get There From Here
Driver 8

Warner Brothers took home the trophy when R.E.M. reached the end of their IRS contract, and before "Green" was even released, the murmurs of "sell-out" began. Oddly enough, the band had been consistently slouching towards the mainstream since "Radio Free Europe" first snuck onto college radio playlists and Document scored a top 40 single. When "Green" dropped with an even slicker production and (frankly) the band's sappiest single yet, "Stand," a lot of earlier fans had their worst nightmares seemingly come to life.

They could not have been more incorrect. Years down the line, it is apparent that Lifes Rich Pageant was the album where R.E.M. became a band that had a frontman as opposed to a quartet of guys who rocked. As Michael Stipe moved more to the front of the band, they became more conventional sounding, if only because the words, ... Read More

R.E.M. ended their tenure at IRS Records with their second 5-star album, "Document." Having flirted with mainstream production with Don Geham on Lifes Rich Pageant, the switch to producer Scott Litt kept the smoother, more arena ready sound, but brought back some of the band's trademark atmosphere. "Document" also became R.E.M.'s first album to sport a hit single, the breakout "The One I Love."

Along with The Police's "Every Breath You Take," "The One I Love's" tale of obsession and paranoia marks one of the most deceptive Top 10 love songs of the 80's. It also sported one of Peter Buck's heaviest riffs. Paired with the high speed rant of "It's The End Of The World as We Know It," (which might as well have become a hit), "Document" boosted R.E.M, from the arms of its beloved cult and into the arms of the mainstream.

Even with that new-found ... Read More
