"Swan Lake" has great meaning for me. I used to rent LPs and would play them in the basement of Fine Arts on the University of Georgia campus. This was in the '50s. There is nothing as soothing as "Swan Lake."

Alexis Weissenberg is a pianist I really _want_ to like. It seems that he and my piano teacher were on a friendly first-name basis. (She affectionately called him "Ziggy"). His steely-fingered account of Prokofiev's 3rd piano concerto riveted that piece into my consciousness and no performance has surpassed it in my opinion. But that same steely-fingered quality has sometimes caused his playing to sound cold to me, especially in the music of Chopin and Debussy. His Rachmaninoff, though, has been consistently admirable, as evidenced by his successful recording of the complete Rachmaninoff Preludes.

This disc features Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto and it was the reason I grabbed it once available. I heard this recording for the first time off an LP via a radio broadcast many ... Read More

this review concerns the piano concerto recordings. Pletnev and Fedoseyev and the Philharmonia play like a house on fire, and Pletnev delivers a refreshingly classical interpretation of the music..appropriate for music by a composer who loved Mozart.

Pletnev delivers a big performance that is, at the same time, utterly transparent at all times. No matter how treacherously difficult the music gets, he never comes close to losing his sange froide. But the performance is never cold. Pletnev and Fedoseyev capture Tchaikovsky's mercurial quality as well as anyone and better than most.

Most of all though, it just sounds as if Pletnev and Fedoseyev thought long and carefully about these performances..they understand this music from the inside out and nothing escapes them. Phrasing, ... Read More

Although Tchaikovsky's music is often performed in a wildly romantic vein, it seems important to point out that his musical idol was not Beethoven(like most romantics), but Mozart. Both the pianist and orchestra give refreshing interpretations of these pieces, which are usually performed with a bit too much bombast. Donohoe's touch is light and bell-like, and complements Tchaikovsky's luminous orchestrations. Most excellent is the neglected second piano concerto, in which Donohoe and the Bournemouth Symphony emphasize the piece's more Mozartean character. However, pianist and orchestra still pack plenty of punch for the big openings and climaxes. Donohoe is not seeking to show off; his tempi are quite sprightly, but not as fast as some pianists, and his forte passages (and they are very loud and exciting) retain ... Read More

Music : Great Conductors of the 20th Century: Sergiu Celibidache
When I was in college in the mid-Sixties tales circulated about a mysterious great conductor who refused to make records and never traveled to the United States. In addition, it was said that Sergiu Celibidache had conducted the Berlin Phil. more htan 400 times after WW II (the Allies selected him because of his impeccable anti-Nazi past) but then disappeared overnight, never to conduct that orchestra again. As it happens, this was all true. Now that Celibidache is dead, his family has sanctioned dozens of live recordings, none from the studio, spanning his legendary career.

Alas, nothing even remotely intriguing is represented here. EMI choces, quqite unfairly, not to include any of its many Celibidache performances of Bruckner, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and other signature composers. Instead we have a batch of ... Read More
