With the centenary of his birth approaching in December 2008, there has been a lot of work by Messiaen performed recently. I know it makes me an apostate to say this, but I remain reserved about the greatness of this composer, finding some of his Catholic mysticism unctuous at best. I cannot contest the fact, however, that some of Messiaen's works for piano are really remarkable, and when performed by the astonishing French pianist Pierre Laurent Aimard, become completely compelling. The early 8 Preludes included here sound like music that Debussy might have composed if he'd lived 15 years longer: moody, complex, and gorgeously colored. While I sometimes grow weary of Messiaen's bird imitations, the two excerpts from the Catalogue d'oiseaux included here come off smashingly. So regardless ... Read More

My concert-going days go back to hearing Artur Schnabel in 1947, and when I say that a recital I heard a year ago by Pierre-Laurent Aimard in which he played five of the 'Vingts Regards' is among the greatest musical experiences I've ever had, it is against that background of almost sixty years of wonderful music heard in many different venues and with many wonderful musicians. (I must add that he also played several of the Ligeti 'Études' and that made it all the more special.) At the same time I must say that my knowledge of Messiaen's piano music had been pretty meager until the past couple of years. The reason for that was that I had been very much turned off by Peter Serkin's recording of 'Vingt Regards' of some years ago (and which I see has just been reissued by RCA in a 'remastered' edition.) ... I returned this item for an exchange, since many of the pages were printed upside down, on 5/27 after following the directions for a return/replacement. It is now 7/09 and I am still waiting for a replacement. I have written twice to the dealer as well as to Amazon including one yesterday. I am tired of reviewing and would like very much for my son to to begin playing Bach. If anyone who actually reads this is in a position to make that happen!

I like the inventiveness of G. Ligeti. The Musica Ricercata Suite is a good and early example of his continuous search for new musical structures.

I'm just a music listener, with no qualification to comment the interpretation of Mr. Aimard.

I'm satisfied.

Chalres Ives was 46 when he published his "Concord"Sonata, and as the liner notes tell us, its sprawling shape and diverse styles are the result of gathering a lot of music previously composed (none of it for solo piano) and needing a single dwelling. Ives always had his own ideas about how music is held together or flies apart. He wasn't afraid to have it fly apart, and often his notion of coherence was so private, rooted in personal memories, that an outside listener can't be expected to penetrate the associations.

Aimard goes a long way in erasing the ecdentricity, privacy, and quirkiness of Ives's idiom bydrawing the sonata into the mainstream of European modernism, giving it the same clean, detailed, accurate, and impressionistic style that he might give to other individualists like Ligeti and Messiaen. ... It's not easy to write about György Ligeti today, as he has just passed away last Monday, so this is the first review I write about his works with Ligeti death... We know it could happen because of his very weak health, but it hurts when finally it's confirmed that he is not with us... We have his works and that's the most direct way to the immortality, that one Ligeti is living now in our memory and in our ears, those that were filled so many times with his extraordinary music, one of the best I know in the XXth Century, that finally will be Ligeti's century, as his work is quite complete written in that period.

Teldec continued some years ago Sony series of Ligeti music, a break that didn't suffer too much of that change, adding enormous artists like those you can listen in this CD. All the series is an outstanding thing, ... Read More

In the mid-1940s Olivier Messiaen, the composer of a wide variety of Roman Catholic pious works, took a peculiar turn towards the subject of romantic love. A 1945 commission from the Boston Symphony Orchestra gave him carte blanche for a work of whatever proportions he desired. The "Turangalila-Symphony" (1946-1948), supposedly inspired by the legend of Tristan and Isolde, was the result.

The symphony is unconventional in structure, eschewing sonata form and comprising ten movements. It is a massive work both in length, well over an hour, and in the instrumental forces it requires. The orchestra is augmented with a larger percussion section, and there are prominent solo parts for ondes martenot, the early electronic instrument, and for piano. In fact, the symphony, whose fifth movement contains an elaborate piano cadenza, has been called ... Read More

This box should probably be your first choice if you want to get acquainted with the works of Ligeti. The recordings in this box are overseen by Ligeti himself, and they were supposed to be definitive recordings that after his death could show conductors how his music was supposed to be played. As detailed in Richard Steinitz' Ligeti biography, it took two record companies to bring us the complete authoritative works of Ligeti on CD. Sony started a series of cd's called "The Ligeti Edition", but they had to concentrate on the smaller works for solo instruments and chamber ensembles - they simply weren't able to produce the biggest works for choir and orchestra to the composers satisfaction. The project was aborted after 7 cd's, and later continued by Teldec. This box contains all Teldec's 5 cd's of the recordings of the really big works. And as I started out saying, ... Read More

The pendulum has swung far away from personality pianists like Horowitz and Rubenstein who were bigger than the music they played, at least so far as audience appeal went. Aimard is definitely of another breed, the superb technicians and sensitive musicians who almost erase their persoanlities. (Only Martha Argerich seems like a throwback to the grandstanders of yesterday, and she is sixty.) Here we get a superb Berg sonata that makes it sound as lyrical as Schumann.

It's followed by a somewhat aseptic Appassionate, however. Every note's in place, and there's a breahttakig continuity that seamlessly gathers everything into one onrush of feeling. but the feeling doesn't go that deep. By comparison, Pollini, who's so often accused of coldness, is actually much more intense and fervent. However, once you get used to Aimard's self-effacement, there's no denying ... Read More

This 6th installment of the Gyorgy Ligeti Edition contains one (Harmonies) of Ligeti's three pieces used by Stanley Kubrick in the '2001' soundtrack. For that reason alone, this CD is a bit more interesting than some of the others in this series. To me, as a representative of the average listener who happens to like a very broad range of musical styles, this CD is more interesting than Ligeti's string compositions, but not as interesting as his choral works.

Part of the attraction may be the mystery of exactly what instrument is it which is performing some of these pieces. This mystery is simply not there when the pieces are done by violins and their relatives.

While the mystery instumentation is nothing more than an organ, the performers make this hoary monster do a lot more than I am used to hearing in my local church.

The whole series ... Read More
