This is a great CD to listen to after a stressfull day at work. Debussy was an impressionist musician, or that's what they called him during his life. Most people don't know that there were impressionists that were not painters, so this classical musician is a breath of fresh air even for those that do not like classical music.

Previous reviewers have been unnecessarily harsh about this remarkable new release. Part of the appeal here is the prospect of hearing Pierre Boulez in his eighties (but conducting with more vigour than most 20 year olds) working with a group of truly first class musicians.

The result is a magnificent combination of Mozart and Berg. As one would expect, these are beautiful but unsentimental performances, exquisitely balanced, full of detail, with plently of rhythmic vigour, The tempi in Mozart's glorious Gran Partita are on the quick side but not exceptionally so. What is most impressive is the sense of structure - Mozart's perfect forms come across with great clarity: the famous Adagio travels its sublime arc in one effortless sweep; the variations are also a model of lucidity and charm; ... If I was required for the most unerring performances of this legend of the violin, I would pronounce myself for these recordings about Bartok. And this very fact seems incredible because as all of us are aware, Menuhin's refinement was feutred by a mellow and romantic taste.

As long I remember, I should cite to Isaac Stern and obviously Szekely as the only two memorable contenders in this exigent requirements.

Both violin Concertos as well as the two Rhapsodies stand aloof in what interpretative supremacy concerns.

It would be fair to remark the famous recordings made by Sandor Vegh with his 44 duos for violin that still remain as unique in its style and visceral approach.

But, this set well deserves from all who love Bartok

This 8th ranks among the best recordings of this hyper-inflated work.

I can't think of a better introduction to the music of Claude Debussy than this Deutsche Grammophon disc where Pierre Boulez leads the Cleveland Orchestra in four legendary orchestral works. Debussy's music has been called "Impressionistic" because of the vividness of his colours and the vagueness of his forms. The exact large-scale organization of many of his works confound scholars still today. However, the fuzzy textures are worked up through a myriad of small details, and Boulez gives one the best of both worlds in keeping those individual strands clear and distinct while trying to keep the work as a whole coherent. It's also one of the best engineered discs I've even encountered, a wonderful representation of dynamic range and performance space.

Nearly any classical listener will know "La Mer" (1903-1905), ... Read More

Having spent quite a lot of words on Thibaudet/Dutoit (Jean-Yves Thibaudet - Ravel: Piano Concertos, etc.), Collard/Maazel (Ravel: Piano Concertos; Pavane pour une infante défunte; Jeux d'eau; La valse) and Lortie/de Burgos (Ravel: Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D major, Piano Concerto in G major; Faure: Ballade, Op. 19), I will now, at least try to, be more brief: Here we have one of the most beautiful, pristine and spectacular concerto recordings in the stereo era! How is that possible? Well, looking solely at the line-up, it is a bit surprising: Boulez conducting the Cleveland and London Symphony Orchestras in Ravel. Oh, and then there is Krystian Zimerman as soloist in the Concertos.

I believe that last bit explains it all. Through Zimerman's unbelievably imaginative pianism, each and every bit and piece just ... Read More

I am not an expert in sound reproduction or classical music, in fact, I am an expert in nothing. I thoroughly enjoy all of Handel's music and will probably have to replace this down the road when my copy is not returned.

Some marriages are made in heaven, others in hell. At first sight the combination of the lush, impressionist, romantic, sensual and sentimental music of Ravel and the brisk, dry, accurate, ultra-modern conducting of Pierre Boulez might seem to be the latter. However, all brief summaries fail to some extent and fortunately Ravel is not just the former. He is also a magician of the orchestra and a master orchestrator. Whereas Boulez has not for nothing become one of the foremost interpreters of early 20th century French music. Boulez' conducting style is almost unique in music. Whereas most great conductors are able to subtly adjust the tempo of the music to suit the volume and intensity, Boulez almost invariably follows an almost strict tempo (please note the qualifications - this is no metronomic conductor),instead he relies on a very dramatic ... Since this is a selection of works played by various orchestras, it's not really a comprehensive piece of work. But really, Ravel is not one of the "great" composers. Bolero is a fun piece and I enjoy it. For the rest, but for the dates of composition I would swear it was a movie soundtrack.

It is often said, with justification, that Mahler's Seventh Symphony is the most difficult to perform properly. One must get behind the notes to enter fully the spirit of grotesquerie that Mahler wrote into them, and only a few conductors have been able to do so, among them Rafael Kubelik, Claudio Abbado, and - Pierre Boulez.

Boulez is an anomaly among Mahler conductors, just as he is an anomaly among French conductors. Most French conductors who preceded him did not like rehearsing, and in fact found it an impediment to the "sirit of improvisation" that they wished to arouse in performance. But when Boulez came to international prominence in the late 1960s, he brought with him a composer's mind and a fastidious approach to score preparation and rehearsal. His intent has always been to try to give exactly what the composer put on paper. ... Read More
