What incredibly beautiful music this is! Puccini's "Turandot" is my all time favorite and this cast gives a stellar performance on his final, unfinished work. I bought this CD only because I wanted Pavarotti's version of "Nessun Dorma," but I was pleasantly surprised by how wonderful the full performance was.

It is impossible not to be moved to tears when listening to Caballe's "Signore, Ascolta" - this is a scene stealer especially with her held note at the end of the aria that is sure to induce a total "Oh my God" moment. With that said however, Sutherland and Pavarotti are the stars and both effortlessly break the vocal stratosphere in their performances. All under the masterful baton of Zubin Mehta, you are sure to be pleased with this CD. I'm sure you'll love it as much as ... Read More

There is not much more that can be said about this recording. It is one of the finest performances on CD. The pairing of Callas and Corelli is one for the ages and results in a performance that will not be bettered. The other singers, especially Christa Ludwig, all add to the magnificence of the proceedings. Tullio Serafin directs it all demonstrating his great knowledge and experience with the score and his performers. Norma is one of most dramatic operas in the literature and Callas and Corelli are inspired playing off of each other in their roles. Although an older recording, the sound is excellent. This is opera at its best.

I bought this CD as a birthday present for my father and haven't actually heard the content myself. But because I ordered it, Amazon have prompted me to write a review. Certainly the feedback I'm getting is excellent and my Dad has derived hours of listening pleasure from it.

To enjoy the artistry of great tenors, I really prefer collections of arias only. If I want scenes, I want the entire opera, to which I listen while following a libretto, since my exposure to opera has been primarily audio rather than visual. So, I would not have purchased this cd for myself. But I received it as a gift for becoming a member of the local PBS station.
I am glad I have it; and I give it a 5 star rating.
Bjoerling's is, of course, the voice that stands out (or is that my favoritism showing?). The duets with Robert Merrill, especially "The Pearl Fishers" and "La Boheme," marvelously portray the compatibility of the two voices. The remaining selections illustrate Bjoerling's ability to project himself into the character he is portraying.
If you enjoy opera, and especially ... Read More

"The fact that a coarseminded 'reviewer' found Bjorling lacking... is simply another proof of Jussi's quality."

And as for Pavarotti, he idolized Bjorling. "... two interviews with Pavarotti. It is clear that Jussi Björling was his idol. 'When I'm about to train a new opera, I first listen to how Jussi Björling did it. His voice was unique and it's his path that I want to follow. I would more than anything else wish that people compared me with Jussi Björling. It's like so I'm striving to sing.'"

"Anouther quote came from Luciano Pavarotti when he was compared to being in the same league as Bjorling. Pavarotti replied 'Please, I'm only human' a statement demonstrating that even the great modern tenor had enormous respect for Bjorling."

I avoided this recording for a long, long time. Owning two live recordings with Maria Callas (La Scala in 1955, Cologne in 1957), both of which finds her in spectacular form, as well as the London-Decca 1962 recording with Joan Sutherland, I felt no need to acquire this version. Well, lo and behold, I noticed a copy of it on my friend's shelf, and asked him if I could borrow it. My instincts were totally on target. The fabulous Sutherland voice in 1979 (the year this recording was made) is a far cry from the Sutherland of sixteen years before. Make no mistake: the range is still there, but to my ears, the voice itself sounds blanched, white, hooty, and totally colorless. Moreover, her diction is as wholly as ever. It's like you can barely hear any consonants, and all the vowel sounds have a monochromatic sound ... Read More

That was quite a night at La Scala on April 14, 1969! Thomas Schippers, a superior conductor, was presenting his conflated version of Rossini's L'assedio di Corinth, with two really stunning singers. While this version is a bit of a pastiche of the various versions of this opera and its predecessors, this was not uncommon of Rossini, who by this time was borrowing extensively from himself (and here also from others) and there is really no definite version of this opera. (E.g. for the authorized version for the opening of the new opera house in Genoa, Donizetti added a cabaletta he thought would improve things.) The version here may be unique, but it is certainly very satisfying. There is no hint of what version was recorded in the very bare-bones leaflet accompanying the cd -- which not surprisingly contains no libretto and very little ... Read More

"Rigoletto" has been well served on disc; you can go right back to the 1950 Cetra set with Leonard Warren, (see my review) and be very satisfied both with the sound and the superlative performance. I do not find that more recent recordings reach that standard and do not particularly rate the DG version conducted by Giulini; as much as I admire the artists in other things, that set seems to me to lack the edge and theatricality of earlier recordings such as this one - and the voices are simply not as exciting. You certainly get plenty of excitement here, with Merrill turning a performance just as stirring vocally and perhaps even better acted than his earlier Perlea set with Bjorling. He is in tremendous form, that great, bronze voice caressing Verdi's beautiful melodies and his engagement with the role is matched by the technically flawless, girlish, ... Read More
