Andrew Parrott conducts the Taverner Consort and Players is a very affordable set of discs that allow everyone to experience the 'non-choral' choral Bach. Instead of the usual chorus (even the pared down choruses of 16 - 30 members the way most 'authentic' performances use) the works are assigned to one person per part. The result is light, airy, transparent, and very lovely Bach.

Case in point: for the Magnificat 'for 5 voices, 5-part chorus, orchestra & continuo' in D major, Parrott conducts or rather inspires Emily van Evera, Evelyn Tubb, Taverner Consort and Players, Howard Crook, Caroline Trevor, Simon Grant in a new way to hear this gracious work. That Bach can be interpreted in so many ways gives credence to his importance in musical history. This performance, as ... Read More

The soloists manage to focus well enough on their solos. But on the choral pieces, they're not able to muster a consonant between them. Except for the occasional ss or ch or ooo, the choral texts are a blur of schwa. And, the first soprano is frequently inaudible.
Is it possible for an ensemble to be OVER-blended? Something is definitely wrong with the mix! It sounds like they were going for ethereal, but instead of angelic, it sounds quite ghostly.

Faure wrote this Requiem "simply for pleasure, not for any event" where he reflected his personal conpect of death "as a happy deliverance". His Requiem has a couple of different versions. The 1888 version only has five movements. 1893 version has all the seven movements; it's written for soloists, lower strings (there is only a violin part in 'In Paradisum' and a solo violin part in Sanctus), choir, organ, timpani, harp, horns and trumpets. The last version (1901) is orchestrated for the full orchestra due to the publisher's advise to prepare a version for full symphony orchestra. Apparently, Faure was not keen on re-orchestrating his piece, so this job was left to his student(s), where the name of Roger Ducasse comes forward. Which means that the 1893 version had everything that Faure intended for ... Read More

This CD is a stunningly beautiful beginning to what promises to be a very special traversal of the complete Bach cantata repertoire. Bach is the most spiritual of the best-known composers, and, together with the masses and motets, the cantatas are Bach's most spiritual pieces. Suzuki has assembled an awesome cast of performers. The soloists on this CD are more than adequate, and the male solos are sung with exceptional beauty. These three cantatas barely scratch the surface of the repertoire, but they present Suzuki with the opportunity to showcase the capabilities of his team. His interpretations properly capture the solemnity of BWV#4, an early Bach piece on the theme "Christ lag in Todesbanden". Suzuki is careful to let the complexity and beauty of the music overwhelm us, and not present an overinflated ... Read More

There may still be nice folk who suppose that 'Music' sprang full-grown from the head of JS Bach, an exceptional genius who created his special musical idiom in a vacuum. People with a little more listening experience may wonder about the strange silence in Germany between Schuetz and Bach. And even those who have listened most may be skeptical about the inspiration of four obscure German Baroque composers named Tunder, Kuhnau, Bruhns, and Graupner. If so, you'd wouldn't be alone; I bought this CD with low expectations, mostly because of respect for Philippe Herreweghe, and because of the lovely low price.

I confess that I actually know Kuhnau's work fairly well. I appreciate it technically, but I seldom find it hugely exciting: journeyman Baroque, perhaps a little too safe. That could not be said ... Read More

The Clarity of sound, the inmaculate power of the choir and the flawless strings of the orchestra, are signs of Herreweghe's work. This album is a really splendid set of Bach's Advent's Cantatas, rightfully played by the Collegium Vocale and the prestigious soloist, by the name of Sybilla Rubens or Christoph Pregardien. The BWV 62 is the highest point of all these works, and the interpretation just freezes and tears your heart apart...

It is almost certain that Bach, at least for his early cantatas, composed them with the expectation that each entire work be performed by four soloists - no choir or "ripienists," just 4 "concertists." Joshua Rifkin was the most notable and earliest proponents of this theory, and Rifkin's Bach Ensemble recorded them as such., For that and many other reasons, the Rifkin recordings are the gold standard, both for their formal clarity and beauty of performance. (See my review of that recording.)

Nevertheless, these recordings have all the depth and spiritual truth (as noted by an earlier reviewer) that one could ask for from a performance of these works. And the musicianship of the conductor, chorus (just a few extra singers, not a great wall of sound as is encountered, for instance, in John Eliot Gardiner's ... Read More
