Was very pleased with the music. Couldn't have been better. I do wish Mr. Beveridge's Maggot was included, tho. Some of the in-film music also could have been included, but overall I enjoyed the CD.

I am not a huge fan of opera music. Most of it gets on my nerves but I do like it when opera music is mixed in with a smidgeon of pop music. Amici Forever may not create opera music that is pure but their music is nice to listen to when I just want to unwind after a long day at the office. THE OPERA BAND is the group's first album. I heard about it through a television commercial a few years ago and bought a copy. I like the combination of male and female singers. While the song selection is rather predictable (because they have been covered by other artists in the classical/crossover genre), I thought the group did a good job. I particularly enjoyed their version of "Unchained Melody" and Elgar's "Nimrod". The music is a bit bland and the group offers nothing new that I haven't heard before in ... Read More

I listened to just a couple of the clips that were presented on this page and...wow...these guys are hard-core-bad-to-the-bone. I am an avid trombone player and I love this CD. To me it shows off just how capable and versatile the instrument that we all love is.

Of course there should have been much more. I remember there been a Metropolian Opera series called CAST ALBUMS- 100 YEARS that was put out for a limited time only and had like five volumes.
As Peter Filichia noted they left out SHE LOVES ME, BRIGADOON and SWEENEY TODD. Also nothing from PACIFIC OVERTURES, BIG RIVER, CHESS, CRAZY FOR YOU, JEKYLL & HYDE, TITANIC, THE SCARLET
PIMPERNEL, FOOTLOOSE- THE MUSICAL, THE FULL MONTY, URINTOWN...
But they couldn't have put it all. I would have done without Lee Remick's
"Anyone Can Whistle", because the show was a flop. I guess because it was Sondheim's first "serious" show...

This fine recording of "Parnasso in Festa" ("The Festival on Parnassus") beautifully fills one of the few remaining gaps in the Handel discography. The work is in the form of an Italian serenata--an extended cantata--like "Aci, Galatea, e Polifemo" or "Il Trionfo del Tempo." It tells the story of the wedding feast of the king Peleus and the nymph Thetis, with Apollo, Orpheus, and the Muses in attendance. The participants sing the praises of music and of marriage. Some of the music is borrowed from the oratorio "Athalia," which had not been performed in London at the time of this work's premiere, but much of it is new, "all of it fresh and fragrant" (Paul Henry Lang). Matthew Halls, formerly the associate director of the King's Consort, takes the helm for the first time and directs a sparkling performance. ... Read More

I am immensely fond of the various Christmas albums put out by the Choir of King's College at the University of Cambridge. They represent the English tradition at its finest. I especially like the variants of the 9 Lessons and Carols in which biblical lessons are interspersed with the choral renditions. This tradition relates back to 1918 and has been broadcast(and telecast) worldwide since 1928, so I am not alone in my appreciation. This album presents an entirely new body of music in that it contains newer and unfamiliar compositions, some of which have been commissioned in past years for this program. There are 15 selections on the first disk and 7 on the second disk. Like any selection, some of the cuts are better than others, but all are quite beautiful. Whether any will become classics of the caliber of ... Read More

I have listened to this CD over and over again and enjoy it more each time. I disagree that these performances are sub-par in any way. I find the blending of the voices and the music soothing and well done. On more than one occasion I have even been brought to tears.

May i also add that it was awarded Record of the Year 1990 by ABC-FM Stereo

Malin Hartelius is not as famous as she should be. In a culture that rates singers more by power, singers with exceptional technique and expressive capabilities tend to have a slower acceptance. I discovered her on DVD where she displays acting ability that is also exceptional.
Trumpeter Niklas Eklund in the first and final movements of Cantata 51 is equally great.

Gardiner has a unique ability to choose just the right soloists for all his recordings. This 2000 pilgrimage is no exception. I am a choral singer of the amateur type and use his recordings as a reference for style, as well as enjoyment. Being picked for Cantata 51 is possibly one the best endorsements Hartelius can get.

The singing in all the cantatas on this two CD set is top notch.

I have never before been a fan of the male ... Read More
