From tapes compiled during the early-1990s festivals for musicians at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios, producers Stephen Hague, Karl Wallinger and Gabriel put together an outstanding retrospective from the events.

The list of musicians put the "world" in "World Music," and include Papa Wemba, Billy Cobham, Wobble, Wallinger, Sinead O'Connor and Hukwe Zawose. Gabriel takes the lead vocal role on several tracks, but he is more like a super-glue that brought the artists together to share their styles in a considerably looser atmosphere than typically found in recording sessions.

The U.S. release was facilitated through a venture-capital trust initiative, hence Gabriel (finally) had control over the production and content. This is straight from Gabriel's heart and is ... Read More

So, Peter Gabriel's 1986 album, his fifth official studio record, is probably my favourite Peter Gabriel album. There's a great blend of textures, feelings and moods, and I feel it's the most consistent Gabriel solo album I've heard.

There are a lot of talented guest musicians on this album. There's Stuart Copeland's distinctive hi-hats in "Red Rain", Tony Levin's often quirky bass on tracks like "Sledgehammer", a gentle Kate Bush in the reassuring "Don't Give Up", a spirited Laurie Anderson on "This is the Picture" (I must get into her stuff one day). There's even a backing vocal by world musician Youssou N'dour on the vividly emotional "In Your Eyes".

The textures of the tracks, though produced in a similar way, evoke different things. "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time", with ... Read More

"Hit" is a double-CD collection of Peter Gabriel's greatest hits, one disc labelled "Hit," and one labelled "Miss." The great Mr. Gabriel is the former lead singer of Genesis and one of pop/rock's greatest talents because of his clever and inventive lyrics, and notable visual style on videos and in concert. Moreover, his selfless devotion to popularizing world music has made him a champion of otherwise unknown Third World musicians.

"Hit" captures early Gabriel ("Solsbury Hill" "Shock The Monkey"), middle Gabriel ("Sledgehammer" "Steam") and later Gabriel ("I Grieve" "The Drop") and many other songs that capture the flavor and essence of Gabriel's soulful, eclectic style. But as good as this collection is, it's not comprehensive. Missing is "I Have The Touch" and "Mercy Street," and other fans would ... Read More

"Shaking The Tree" is an excellent collection of the talented singer and songwriter's music. Much of his best released work is her, along with newer versions of some of his songs.

This collection has "Solsbury Hill," "Sledgehammer," "San Jacinto," "Mercy Street," "Don't Give Up," and others. An unreleased standout is the alternate version of " I Have The Touch," a rare case when the alternate version far exceeds the original.

Truly, "In Your Eyes," and later Gabriel songs like "Steam" and "The Blood of Eden" aren't on here, but this collection is a great collection nonetheless, and is a great beginning primer for new fans of Gabriel's work.

The selections chosen are, for the most part, to my taste, but the volume is comprised of fewer supurb selections, such as those masterpieces by Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart that were found in Vol. I.

Everything about this CD is absolutely first rate. From the other reviews you cannot doubt the musically perfect pitch, wonderful voice of Fernando Lima, but I must also highlight the perfect muscianship of the production including wonderful flute, piano, etc..It is not often where a singer can 'share' the production equally with first rate muscians and neither ever over-shadow the other!----This is a quality production rarely produced in the states anymore. Even folks who only like opera may love this, but it is best suited to the 'classically diverse' listener.----A feast for the ears!---- Fernando, please hurry on your next production, please, and thanks!!

Everyone that loves this record- me too - I'm not going to attempt to go over the record, I can share with you my "Passion" for the songs "Of these, Hope" and of course the Reprise of this song and its effect. I've often tried to tell people that the power of these songs are so deep to me, its almost pavlovian... as soon as I hear the melody beginning to form in the first song, I'm surprised by my tears beginning to form as well. Its a good thing- like an epiphany. Not "boo hoo". Well... it can be too...depends on where you are with yourself when you hear it- you might just miss it entirely. Its because to me, it evokes thoughts about life & mortality in the melody- Its true. its easy to identify with being human and hardships of life in this melody, and yet its absolute innocence and pain hidden beneath. Like a ... Read More
