1.Christmas Mass in Rome from: Polygram Records

Music : Christmas Mass in Rome
This is one the very best Gabrieli consort discs and almost impossible to get hold of. If you get an opportunity grab it and make a back up. The Palestrina on the disc is mind-blowing. A totally McCreeshian take on a usually serenely, gently sung composer. The performance is polar opposite to for example, the sublime Pro Cantione Antiqua discs. In particular the Kyrie, Gloria and Credo are breathtaking, the rest of the mass, still brilliant is less impressive. McCreesh succeeds in making Palestrina not just beautiful, but exciting. The plainchant on the disc is of the very best sort that McCreesh can produce, with perfect acoustics. The Victoria motets are truly magnificent and compete with Palestrina's mass. The canzone are not particularly brilliant, nor are the motets at the end of the mass. ... Read More

'NOW DOES THE GLORIOUS DAY APPEAR' ON THIS DISC WITH GLORIOUS SINGING!

Purcell compositions for Queen Mary span the whole of her brief reign. He provided music for her coronation, on April 11,1689; for the formal celebraton of her birthday on April 30 each year; and for her funeral, on March 5, 1695. At the coronation of William and Mary his 'I was glad' was one of 9 anthems performed during this ceremony.

Purcell, in his position as Abbey Organists has tailored the music with precision. The opening passage is in stately block chords-straightforward for the choir to co-ordinate while proceeding along the nave, and arriving in their places just in time to watch the conductor for the closing bars. Later in the service the 2nd anthem by Purcell was sung:"Praise the Lord, ... Read More

Music : Venetian Vespers (Monteverdi * Rigatti * Grandi * Cavalli) /Gabrieli Consort & Players * McCreesh
This really a fine recording. I bought my copy one sunny Saturday morning in Melbourne in around 1993. I saw it on the shelf and I got my wallet out. I was completely blown away by the music on this disc. Rigatti was a real discovery for me.

The use of high falsettists in the chorus and solos is particularly effective and gives us a real insight into the sounds of music in Venice in the early 17th century.

I cannot recommend this marvellous recording too highly, it is clearly one of the best made by the Gabrieli Consort, Choir & Players.

Great playing from the strings, cornetti and tromboni.

Twenty pieces from as many composers or nearly (two author repeats) from baroque times to modern times, from Italy to the United States, though only from the Western world. The objective of this CD is to show the immense variety of the performer, his virtuosity, flexibility and adaptability. The second objective of this CD is to provide a showcase for the violin that is the real star of the show. But the CD has no real unity in its extreme variety, and it does not speak one language, not even that of the violin, because the violin is only the vocal cord of the composer's language and there is so little in common in the languages of Vivaldi and Gershwin, except the harmonics of the good modern classical violin, which is historically false. Yet the pieces chosen here are so well-known that we can consider the CD as ... Read More

This cd is generally very very nice. I think this is only my 2nd cd with Marais music on it so I was interested to see if it was as good as the Marais stuff on Jordi Savall's Tous les Matins du Monde. I would say that I liked it about as much as that cd, except for the Couplets de Folies. On that track I thought the viol was too low in the mix. It wasn't "front and centre" like it is in Savall's version. Of the rest of the pieces on the disc the D major suite (tracks 5-10) is definitely my favourite; it's mostly slow & simltaneously happy & sad somehow. I think the other two suites are almost as good.

Yes, it's a Greatest Hits Of Henry Purcell, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with that! A stellar selection of (partial) works by superb musicians on a packed single disc, it's a one-stop introduction to a very great composer. It's worth mentioning the remastered sound, too, because it adds to the music's vibrancy.

This recital features a selection of songs on sacred or moral texts which are by-and-large solemn and penitent. The mood ranges from vigorous and expectant (in Awake ye dead) to downright miserable and tormented (Plung'd in the confines of despair). There is a lot of quasi-recitative in these songs, and the text is very vividly expressed in the word-painting. Strong talent and technique are required to bring these off successfully, and fortunately we have such an ensemble doing that here.

All of the singers are extremely gifted musicians, but I will have to single out Charles Daniels who, aside from being one of the best early music tenors ever, is one of the best Purcellian singers as well. Here is a full list just so you know about whom I heap my praise:
Sopranos: Tessa Bonner, Susan Hemington Jones.
