I am a musical novice. I was brought up listening to Pink Floyd, Santana, Joni Mitchell, and so on. I could not read music to save my life. Then someone introduced me to some Josquin Des Pres Rennaissance Polyphony - Missa L'homme arme sexti toni, Agnus Dei, to be specific - and I was totally hooked.

A few years later, someone introduced me to this CD, and I was even more taken. For some reason, I really like the Perotin-composed pieces - tracks 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9. The Beata viscera (track 8) is other-worldly, and quite possibly one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard in my entire life!

You don't have to be a musical scholar to enjoy this - it's simply beautiful!

After several years of singing in a church choir, I got exposed to many, many different styles of choral music. We sang modern versions of some of these songs, which were really nice. This, however, was a spectacular opportunity to hear the same music more closely to the original composition. If you enjoy choral music, this should be at least interesting to you. The performances are all a capella, lending more of a "not modern mass consumption" feel. Of course, I love a capella, so I might be a bit biased there.

Much of it is powerful. All of it is well done. The text is easily understandable - it isn't sung for some 'artistic complexity', like opera (where it sounds nice, but can't really understand what they're singing). If you are interested because of its source material (traditional ... Read More

Wow! I guarantee most people will not have heard a disc like this before. The Machaut is sublime, gritty, unexpected and just excellently performed here by the Orlando Consort.

However it's Tarik O'Regan's 'Scattered Rhymes', which opens the disc that will blow you away. For one thing it's FAST, something which most new choral music is not. For this piece, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir (Paul Hillier) joins the Orlando Consort and the effect is mesmerizing. I think it feels like a concerto for the Consort, where the soloists get to show off their virtuosic mastery against the rich sound of the Estonians.

I repeat: you will not have heard anything like this before!

In C is a piece that is notorious for being treated with excessive jazz flair with little respect for phrases or musicality (especially by sax players, who have been all over the map in other recordings.) This results in the piece sounding sleezy, uninspired, unmusical and far too loud!

Quite simply put, this is the best performance of this piece that I own and have ever heard. I would use words like sleek, mysterious, and sexy to describe this amazing performance. The ensemble takes full advantage of dynamics and has incredible phrase development throughout.

You will not be disappointed!

7.Home to Thanksgiving by: Theatre Of Voices, His Majestie's Clerkes, Andrew Lawrence-King

Music : Home to Thanksgiving
This is a wonderful collection of music for thanksgiving - not just for the holiday, but for everyday. From the energetic opening, "Tis By Thy Strength The Mountains Stand", to the haunting "Evening Hymn" at close, this music is pure joy to listen to. The styles are quite varied and cover everything from plainchant to a somewhat modern take on Thoreau, and it is all very well performed. It is music that sends the soul soaring in thanksgiving to God.

This is really a set to treasure. The Kronos quartet's credentials, along with the Ardittis, as champions of new music are not in question, but whereas the Ardittis champions the avant-garde end of the spectrum, the Kronos focuses on the more, shall we call it "post-avantgardish" composers. Thus, Kronos has, in addition to playing and commissioning music by leading contemporary composers - in particular those associated with minimalism - made forays into world- and non-western (and even pop) music. Indeed, it is perhaps striking that none of the composers featured on this set are, at least originally, from Western Europe (but there is, to be fair, a disproportionate number of Americans here). Still, the material - mostly reissued from earlier Kronos releases - displays a wide variety of styles, from uncompromising ... Read More

That's the "cantus firmus" - the pattern of sustained notes around which the harmony is composed - of the Missa Hercules Dux Ferrariae by Josquin Deprez (1440-1521). It translates into modern pitches as "D-C-D-C-D-F-E-D". It's derived from matching the vowels of the hexachord ut-re-mi-fa-so-la with the vowels of the name hErcUlEs dUx fErrArIE. Hercules in this cryptogram is Duke Ercole d'Este of Ferrara, to whom the mass was obviously dedicated. Those eight notes form the subtle melodic basis for the entire mass composition; they are heard again and again, sometimes almost subliminally, transposed to higher pitches, inverted, stretched and condensed. Renaissance polyphony is full of such cryptic coded messages, as well as remarkably complex mathematical puzzles expressed in the notation of the era. And occasionally, whole lines ... Read More
