Before going to NYC in the spring I was least excited to see the musical South Pacific. Remembering only the low-quality film version I had seen as a child I thought the musical would be dull. I could not have been more wrong. The musical echoes of classic Broadway with an outstanding pit orchestra dressed to the nines in tuxedos and black dresses, it was a welcome change from the lax behavior often seen in orchestras with the tubas doing crossword puzzles and absentmindedly listening to the show. The voices of the two leads were absolutely amazing, especially Kelli O'Hara's crystal clear voice. The CD remarkably captures her clarity as well as the beauty of the original sweeping orchestrations. The CD also has a few numbers not included in other cast recordings, songs like "My Girl Back Home" ... Read More

My father beat me once for a misdeed, and I resolved then
and there that Iwould never cry under his beltings again.
He whipped me 'til his belt broke and I would not give him the satisfaction of one tear.

But this music...and this movie... draws out what
the belt could not. It gets me every time. I fight it and the
tears well up on their own...what a perfect tragedy this movie
is, how haunting the music. Gordon McRae was such an artist.
His singing is perfect and inspired in these songs --- and
Shirley Jones complements him so well. I fell in love with her
Julie at first sight. If you haven't got this music or this
movie, you are missing out on one of life's greatest treasures.

This concert version of the broadway show is awesome in many respects. The pairing of Reba McEntire and Brian Stokes Mitchell at first seemed so "strange/different" It could not have been a better combination. They were "in" character throughout - not easy in a concert performance. The chorus numbers were outstanding and Alec Baldwin was, well, he was just a hoot!
Finally Brian Stokes Mitchell's rendition of "This Nearly Was Mine" is probably the best, most heartfelt that I have ever heard.

This CD has the musical numbers from the 1965 motion picture entitled The Sound Of Music. While this is not the latest version of the soundtrack CD with all the bells and whistles; this still remains a solid album giving us every last hit song from this major motion picture musical. The quality of the sound is clear and crisp; and that artwork is really very beautiful.

The CD begins with the music from the prelude and the overture to the movie musical. This music is delightful and they never miss! The strings and percussion are used to great advantage and we essentially get a musical medley of the arrangements for the major songs in the movie. Excellent! "Maria" is sung by several actresses playing nuns at the convent; they sing flawlessly about Maria, a nun who just doesn't fit in with the ... Read More

The Rodgers & Hammerstein musical version of the fairy tale Cinderella is a timeless story of love and fulfillment of one's dreams. Despite her life of drudgery at the hands of a mean step-mother and two equally mean step-sisters, beautiful, sweet-natured Cinderella remains ever hopeful that one day she will find someone to love and care for her. The music is simple, but hauntingly beautiful, and you find yourself singing it long after hearing this lovely music. After 43 years, this is still one of the most enjoyable musicals I have ever heard.

OK, if you have kids or are around kids, they have sung the scores to the above mentioned shows until even the birds on the wallpaper know how they go. But it's not really the kids fault--just broaden their musical horizons with this lovely classic. The songs are simple, but memorable and have just enough musical richness to keep them interesting rather than predictible. Soon they will be another musical played over and over and over....ahh childhood.

This is quite the oddest recording quality for a major C.D. release I've ever heard. The film was a mess but a big hit nevertheless. Isolated from the movie, the soundtrack reveals the truly lush qualities and sterling artistry in the performances. Conrad Salinger's arrangements, per usual, are amazing and unmatched. The talent represents as assemblage of peerless artists. So why is the sound here so muddy, muddled, off balance and just strange? I don't get it. The original 10-inch M-G-M L.P. sounded better! Annette Warren is a remarkable singer, but Ava Gardner's vocals are also tremendously moving. The lady who should have gotten the part of Julie is Lena Horne but the powers at M-G-M were too chicken to cast her. Still, her good friend Gardner is devastating in the role. Worth having, worth ... Read More

TSOM is a nice score, not R&H's best, but still heads over so much else at the time. Much has been said about Mary Martin's being too old. Apparently R&H didn't think so since they wrote TSOM for her. And audiences loved it! So much so that she won the Tony award that year. (Over Merman in Gypsy. Although, truth be told, Merman was not particularly popular with the theatrical community. From accounts I've read she was a major diva and a total b***h. And since it was her peers who were Tony voters...) Still it's a nice recording of pleasant R & H standards, different in scope than the film soundtrack but pretty good on it's own merit. Enjoyable!

I must say I have enjoyed this score over the years, however, the play does drag and presents itself much better in a concert version, which we are seeing alot of these days of older musicals...Must add that there is a 20 minute clip of original Broadway Cast performing music from the show in full costume with sets on the Ed Sullivan Show from December, 1958, shortly after the show opened on the Internet...it is quite fun to see all of the major stars of the original show performing their numbers, while show is fresh on Broadway...we see Miyoshi Umeki (I am going to like it here), Pat Sazuki (I Enjoy being a girl) Larry Blyden (Sunday), Love Look Away, etc.. also great to see Juantia Hall perform her numbers....many of these stars are now gone (Hall, Umeki, and Larry Blyden, who was killed in a vehicular accident ... This recording has a few lines that make the songs more complete, The great Audra Macdonald and that's it. The earlier london recording is vastly superior. Julie in London was acted to perfection, not as a dopey ingenue but as a three dimensional character and it shows on the recording, Micheal Haydyn's Billy is acted more than sung on both and on stage it's great but on a recording I prefer a "real" voice as Billy. But except for the missing
"Greatest Judge of All" this recording and the earlier London cast , together make the most complete Carousel. My favorite of all the recording though is the old RCA studio cast with Robert Merril, Patrice Munsel and Florence Henderson.
