I'm not opera literate, so I was looking for some kind of introduction that had some familiar arias and that would connect me to others that I had not heard. I liked that the notes with the cd indicated where a new listener may have heard some of the music (in a commercial, during an important scene in a movie, etc). This was the source of a lot of 'Ah ha!' moments. It even inspired me to rent a dvd of a live version of Turandot and to put others on my Netflix queue. I owe my newly aroused curiosity about opera, believe it or not, to Il Divo. I had to know what these guys sing when they're not reinterpreting pop songs. I'm glad I started this journey and this cd was a good start.

this really is an amazing set. rarely are compilation sets filled with such consistently good music as well as offering the breadth and diversity found here. also, this is THE introduction to opera, as far as i'm concerned. if you don't enjoy opera after listening to this set, then opera is probably just not for you.

No doubt the most versatile tenor between Caruso and Domingo. 359 Met performances, in five different languages, with perfect diction in each.
This versatility clearly represented on this recording, not only in languages, but also in musicality. The pensive "Una furtiva lagrima," the heroic "Dimitri! Tsaryevich! Dimitri!" the wonderful softness of "Magische Tone."
Thank you, EMI, for bringing together such a representative compilation of this marvelous tenor's works!
And, thank you, Amazon, for making it available at such a reasonable cost--$16.98 for more than two and a half hours beautiful singing.
(I may stand corrected on the five languages at the Met. I am not certain when "Eugene Onegin" was first sung in Russian.)

The eternal diva is represented once again from documentary sources culled from Europe, this time the program-length Parisian Sunday "chat" show L'Invitee Du Dimanche hosted by Pierre Desgraupes. It is fascinating to see this program in its undilluted form. Snippets of the conversations Callas had with Luchino Visconti, interview with teacher DeHidalgo and the Paris Opera Gala have been seen before. It is illuminating to see and hear the diva discuss her art in a sophisticated, highly philosophical manner during a transitional period in her career. She was on the verge of filming Pasolini's Medea, contemplating a stage comeback, and trying to find herself (especially after her long affair with Onassis had ended). The tv host has the good manners not to bring up the diva's temepestuous personal ... Read More

9.Massenet: Werther from: Naxos
January 16, 2001
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Massenet: Werther
This is the most authentic recording of Massenet's "Werther". No later singers can match Thill and Vallin (a soprano singing a mezzo role) in diction, voice, commitment, and feeling, for this masterpiece. The remastering, thanks to the genius of Ward Marston (born blind), hardly sounds like a recording from 1931. A real gem which catches the drama behind this moving story. The most French recording of a French operatic masterpiece.

Advice for the San Diego gentleman: listen to the recording first before sending in your comments. It's laughable to blindly defend Nicolai Gedda's singing in Nadir's role without even listening to the recording!

While I gave this recording five stars for its glorious sound and very good performance from all stars including Mr. Nicolai Gedda, he does indeed sound a bit strained in the romance "Je crois encore entendre". This is not surprising since Bizet wrote this passage in extremely high notes!

I highly recommend this recording to all Bizet fans.
