It's unfortunate that Arte Nova's Dutilleux recordings aren't more recommendable. Like the previous issue of the Symphony No. 2, Shadows of Time and Metaboles, this issue is simply not competitive. Again, the individual wind players lack the confidence in Dutilleux's complex passagework that is necessary to achieve a real sense of exuberance--confidence that is on bold display in Tortelier's fine recordings on Chandos. The First Symphony has been served by so many great conductors with equally fine orchestras, and the sloppy playing and lack of direction in these readings plainly misrepresent Dutilleux's musical language. It is a pity that people will be likely to buy one of these recordings as an entreé into his world - I don't blame them...the price is tempting - but will likely end ... Read More

A few months back on the TV Network Bravo, a performance by the Bastille opera of Carmen, starred Beatrice Uria Monzon, an artiste generally unkown in the US. You may well recall her fascinating performance coupled by her beautiful singing. French audiences are noted for their critical reaction to artists of great calibre. Anyone buying this album will be assured 100% that they are listening to the very best there is. I said the second Carmen. The first being the magical Solange Michel who performed the title character for 0ver 500 times at the Opera Comique in Paris 50 years ago, and whose recording conducted by the late incomparable Andre Cluytens is available in the UK, not the US. Buy them both. The French EMI recording is mono only, but youre in for a fantastic look at the two ... Read More

way back in the era of "love" came along someone who really preached what it was all about:as in when you had the open happy fields of the south with Sweet Blindness (as in the happiness one feels with a swift drink which you will not tell anyone what you've been a drinkin' (Jack Daniels, come to think of it)-lots of love, possible; the tracks and cracks and open wounds of possibly crack cocaine in Poverty Train and the thought of a starving feeling (before the time of March of Dimes or was it always there?);or as in lonely women who strive for tomorrow without a hint of love in Lonely Women, perhaps a paen to the abortion process; the driven bravado of the lover who leaves all behind him in Eli's Coming (am I right or wrong); the great happy time of Stoned Soul Picnic, if ever a self-titled ... Music : Dutilleux: Orchestral Works
Perhaps I've been spoiled by the many fine recordings of these works already extant. If you're finding your way to Dutilleux for the first time, these might be enjoyable; however, save your money and go for the really upper tier recordings of this music. Dutilleux's music requires security in execution. It requires virtuosos in every seat of the ensemble. It requires a conductor who can pace and combine cathartic gestures and lyrical statements to build towards an overwhelming climax. And it requires excellent, crystal-clear recorded sound to let the listener bask and discover the many, many layers of detail in this music. The Arte Nova series of Dutilleux's orchestral works lack about 80% in all of these areas that is necessary. The complex wind passage-work is misplayed, faked or left ... Read More
