Bryn Terfel has a one-in-a-million voice. Lovely singing. Fine song selection. Maybe a tad too dramatic, but my real complaint centers on the excessive dynamic range between soft passages and loud. It's just too much. One moment, you're turning up the stereo to hear him sing a soft passage, the next he's blasting you out of your car or house. This happens several times per song. Volume compression could smooth out the highs and lows a bit, but purists would no doubt cry foul. In short, make sure your neighbors love Terfel as much as you do!

Mr Lambert, I took a gamble on your "Last Will and Testament" looking for some new choral music, you did not dissapoint. The title work remains a solid listen throughout. It is works like this that make classical music so much fun, to find a great hidden gem (something hyperion and harmonia mundi seem to do so well). I completely agree with the previuos two reviews.

Nabucco, one of Verdi's "early" operas, is a wonderfully exciting piece of music for which there are few too commercial recordings. As previously noted, the lead soprano role of Abigaille is a voice killer attempted by only the most courageous and (sometimes) the most technically secure of sopranos. Verdi's compositional style, both orchestral and vocal, for this opera is muscular and athletic and in the right hands can be a powerful theatrical experience. It's a true ensemble piece that requires a lot of team players who can also shine in their solo assignments.

This recording, a welcome addition to the catalog, does the piece much justice. Parry's conducting is grand, vigorous, and has a lot of theatrical muscle, but sometimes lacks warmth. The orchestral detail is particularly ... Read More

I could only give this CD 3 stars (barely).
If I were only considering the voice
of Maria Callas, I would have given
a solid 5 stars.
HOWEVER,
what makes this CD unrecommendable is the audio
quality. I understand perfectly well the
technical audio capabilities of that time period,
and this is totally unacceptable. It sounds as if someone
recorded these recitals on a hand-held tape recorder in
their pocket in the stall of a restroom of a building
across the street; If that good!
You hear more audience noise and feedback hissing
than Callas' performance. It's very difficult to fully appreciate
her singing.

On a positive note, one track stands out above all. "Al Dolce Guidami" is brilliant. ... Read More

This disc can be thought of as either a sampler or a mixed recital. The title on the liner is approximately accurate. There are 15 items extracted from other Chandos discs, all sung in English by way of promoting the Opera in English project. Most of the selection is from Italian opera, but not everything is Italian and not everything is opera. Bizet and Janacek are here too, one famous piece of Italian Can Belto is Rossini's Cuius Animam, originally to a Latin text, and the disc ends with a fine stirring rendition of Rejoice Greatly from the Messiah, which of course was in English to start with.

In my own collecting I am not a snippets person, and this disc was sent to me on a complimentary basis following my response to a marketing initiative. However on its own terms the disc strikes me ... Read More
