I share the very positive sentiments of the other reviewers. I have heard both of the Boulez anthologies and prefer this one, although the other is excellent too. Compared to the classic Karajan Webern single CD with the same orchestra, which I also admire, the newer Boulez performances of the same pieces are marked by equally fantastic orchestral playing, and even better recording quality, which makes the extreme dynamics of Webern's writing more effective. If there is a better Opus 1 by any composer than Webern's Passacaglia, I would like to hear it. The Schubert and especially Bach arrangements on the first CD are first class. In my view, all the performances are successful - with special kudos to the soprano Christiane Oelze and the Emerson String Quartet. The documentation, in substance ... Read More

Music : In L'Istesso Tempo
The recent release of Giya Kancheli's music on the ECM New Series label (In l'istesso tempo), featuring Gidon Kremer, has been keeping me spellbound of late. This is not the kind of music that you would listen to on your way to work, however. It is for after hours, when you have finished with the day's demands and are able to relax quietly with a glass of wine and no outside disturbances. You will turn the lights down low (or even shut them off entirely) when listening to such music, as the entire experience is meant for the sense of hearing.

Kancheli's music is idiosyncratic. If I had to compare him to any other modern-day composer it might be Arvo Pärt in that both composers possess a minimalist approach. But they differ beyond this initial resemblance. Pärt's music possesses a very ... Read More

After receiving multiple box sets of the complete works of Webern, I was happy that Alban Berg is finally receiving the same treatment. Although I favor Webern's music over Berg's, he's still one of my favorite composers. I'm not sure why he doesn't receive as much attention as Webern and Schoenberg (with the exception of "Wozzek"), but he doesn't and, until now, collecting his oeuvre has been difficult, to say the least. Now, we have access to everything, with classic performances no less.

My main complaint is that the set feels a bit cheap. Where the Deutsche Grammophon Webern box set contains six CDs in slimline jewel cases, and a large, multi-lingual book, the Berg collection contains eight CDs in flimsy cardboard sleeves and includes a much smaller booklet. We can certainly appreciate ... Read More

Excellent music selection and top level musicianship make this CD for sure one of the best clarinet chamber music recordings. The entire album is a joy to listen to.
Sabine Meyer is one of, if not THE best, clarinetist right now. It is not very often that a CD with such great selection of music and musicians is released.
One reservation about the recording quality:
Sabine plays the German Oehler system clarinet, which has a rounder tone than the more commonly used French Boehm system clarinet, therefore when recording such instrument care needs to be taken not to over-emphasize the round tone of this clarinet. On this particular recording, at times Sabine's clarinet can sound a bit too full. May be I am too picky, but I've noticed it. Overall though, this is one great CD. My favourite piece ... Read More

I sort of ignored this collection after I bought it because of how much music there is to contend with, but I recently re-discovered these discs and WOW. I really love hearing Kremer play Beethoven. His style compliments this music in some surprising and profound ways.

A fine combo disc of Franck's two great masterpieces; can hardly go wrong with Gidon Kremer.

Gidon Kremer released this delicious little CD in 1999 and it has more or less gone unnoticed since then. This is not a 'soundtrack favorites' jumble but a serious approach to some beautiful melodies as interpreted by Kremer and pianist Oleg Maisenberg, with the added presence of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra conducted by the gifted Andrey Boreyko.

Works included are by Charlie Chaplin ("Smile"), Nino Rota, Takemitsu, Shostakovich, Milhaud, Piazzola, Dunayevsky, and Giya Kancheli. The arrangements are well written and the performances honor this genre of music with the same degree of dignity offered the 'serious' works of these composers. It is a bit of lightness but a not fluff and the beautiful playing by Kremer is well worth the listening. Grady Harp, November 05
