When you compare Freni with the light roles that she used to sing in the 60s and this Freni, you will think they are two different singers. But what is truly amazed is the fact that not only her voice changed, but she became bar none to one the hardest heavy lyric soprano roles ever: Mimi. And when she has Pavarotti next to her, it is like heaven. But, wait... Who is conducting is Karajan, unarguably one of the best puccinian ever. This is a record to listen, re-listen, re-listen, re-listen until I don't know when...

What incredibly beautiful music this is! Puccini's "Turandot" is my all time favorite and this cast gives a stellar performance on his final, unfinished work. I bought this CD only because I wanted Pavarotti's version of "Nessun Dorma," but I was pleasantly surprised by how wonderful the full performance was.

It is impossible not to be moved to tears when listening to Caballe's "Signore, Ascolta" - this is a scene stealer especially with her held note at the end of the aria that is sure to induce a total "Oh my God" moment. With that said however, Sutherland and Pavarotti are the stars and both effortlessly break the vocal stratosphere in their performances. All under the masterful baton of Zubin Mehta, you are sure to be pleased with this CD. I'm sure you'll love it as much as ... Read More

you don't have to be an opera lover to love this album. Pavarotti 's golden voice is at its best in this recording of Puccini's wonderful opera.
I listen to this CD constantly and never tire of it. If you are hoping to convert someone to an opera fan, this is the recording to do it.

This is the first recording of "Lucia di Lammermoor" that I've ever bought, and I do believe that this is going to be the last the I've ever bought. It's an almost perfect recording, with a clever conductor and a spectacular cast of singers. Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti sound amazing when they sing their parts; the "Mad Scene" in particular is spine-tingling. The supporting cast (Sherrill Milnes, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Huguette Tourangeau) make it all the more complete. I did have a problem with the recording's "sound effects"; it's kind of distracting once you get into this studio recording. But SFX aside, this is one of the greatest acheivements in opera CD history. I highly recommend it to opera beginners, and to those who don't even like Donizetti.

There are so many good recordings of "Aida" available and I own - and play - eight of them, but I keep coming back to this one as my favourite. This might partly be for purely personal reasons: it was one of the first sets I bought when as a nineteen year old I was just discovering opera and I still recall the sense of transported wonder I first experienced listening to that magical, moonlit Nile music; then just after that I was able to hear most of the artists on this recording live at Covent Garden and that cemented my preference for this version. Even though Caballe did not much look the part of a lissom Ethiopian princess, her voice did all the work as she spun those delicate pianissimi to every corner of the auditorium. And those almost unearthly high notes, sung "con un fil di voce" are still ... Read More

I avoided this recording for a long, long time. Owning two live recordings with Maria Callas (La Scala in 1955, Cologne in 1957), both of which finds her in spectacular form, as well as the London-Decca 1962 recording with Joan Sutherland, I felt no need to acquire this version. Well, lo and behold, I noticed a copy of it on my friend's shelf, and asked him if I could borrow it. My instincts were totally on target. The fabulous Sutherland voice in 1979 (the year this recording was made) is a far cry from the Sutherland of sixteen years before. Make no mistake: the range is still there, but to my ears, the voice itself sounds blanched, white, hooty, and totally colorless. Moreover, her diction is as wholly as ever. It's like you can barely hear any consonants, and all the vowel sounds have a monochromatic sound ... Read More

The audio, numbers, and performances of very good,
and the value outstanding, as you get almost everything
that Borodin, the composer, created in his career
on this dual release - more complete than the previous
DECCA version, as this one is expanded, of course.

I would recommend this release be coupled with the
other composers comprising the Magificient Five of Russia,
namely the Balakirev Vols 1 and 2 on Naxos, (very moody)
Cesar Cui (very nicely done) on Naxos, Mikhail Glinka conducted
by Vassily Sinaisky (amazing) and finally, Glazunov's
number with The Seasons and Violin Concerto.

In this way, the precursor of Igor Stravinsky's compositions
can be better understood, from the above Russian creators
of timeless music.

Yes, this is a lovely recording. Pavarotti and Freni are worth the money alone. The orchestra sound amazing, and the Decca-boys created a sound-world like only they could. BUT: von Karajan, as very often, ruins the theatre of the piece with very self-indulgent tempi. He simply loves the sound he makes too much. And the supporting cast: I'm sorry, but Harwood sounds very tight and decidedly unsexy as Musetta, and Panerai, with his tight, goaty vibrato barks a lot. Having said all that, the only other Boheme I ever listen to is Björling and De Los Angeles. A shame, though, that "von I Love Myself" spoiled the party. PS: The cover, is the original, from the LP-issue from way back when. Just so you know.
