With Lorraine Hunt you can't go wrong. Her appeal is universal: those who don't fancy opera will love it because of her virtuoso capability, originality and sincerity. Laurent Naouri expressed the core of her appeal: "When she sang her character, people would forget all that is conventional in opera. People would forget even her singing; they would just feel something so deep and true." Bravo, Lorraine, you set a standard for all time.

Arcangelo Corelli (1653 – 1713): Concerti Grossi Op. 6, Volume 2 (concerti nos. 7 through 12). Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, directed from the harpsichord by Nicholas McGegan.
Recorded in April 1990 by Skywalker Sound, Nicasio, California.
Harmonia Mundi USA Originally issued on HMU 907015, re-issued in the budget Classical Express series as HMCX 3957015. Total time: 57’13”.

Anyone who wants to become more familiar with that typically baroque musical phenomenon, the Concerto grosso, ought to start with the most famous set of all, the twelve concerti by Arcangelo Corelli. These were published one year after the composer’s death in 1713, but had been performed by him in Rome for over twenty years with one of the most polished orchestras of the age. The modern historical ... Read More

... but on CD much of this huge performance of Alessandro Scarlatti's "Cecilian Vespers" sounds underrehearsed. Each of the soloists has a few ragged spots and a few bars of suspect tuning. Frankly the soloists' voices don't assemble well, to my ears, into any kind of vocal balance; they are all on their own trajectories. The chorus is solid enough, but not beautiful in sound. Nick McGegan is a masterful conductor of Handel, always bringing out the best from his Philharmonia baroque Orchestra and Chorus, but here, again to my ears, he makes Scarlatti sound far too Handelian, English rather than Italian. The bottom line is that this recording doesn't approach the musical standard set by Concerto Italiano and Il Seminario Musicale. It's worth hearing if you're a voracious Scarlatti fan, but if not, you might ... Read More

I purchased a copy of this shortly after its release for an opportunity to hear the variants included. Having satisfied my curiosity, I've pretty much relegated it to the shelf. It's one of those recordings I respect without much enthusiasm. The much lamented Lorraine Hunt is the standout soloist. William Parker's baritone is well suited to the high lying tessitura of the bass part and his tone is nicely plush - and poignant given that he passed away not long after the recording from effects of a long illness. The other soloists are thoroughly professional. I have never cared much for the sound of the UC Berkeley Chorus in this or the other Handel oratorios McGegan recorded with them. There's nothing wrong with the choral voices as such, but I think glee club every time I hear them. The booklet makes much of the recording's ... Read More

To hear this recording of the Corelli concerti for the first time is eye opening. The clarity is unsurpassed by any orchestral recording I have ever heard. I have had the experience several times, of putting this (or its companion disc II) on with people visiting, and soon the conversation ends, and they say, "what IS that you just put on?" The other reviewer says at times it is "mannered". Corelli is said to have insisted that all players bow their parts in unison, so I think for it to sound "mannered" is what he was seeking. There are places on this disc where you would consider that perhaps this is a contemporary "fusion" piece rather than something written 300 years ago. This orchestra also does a spectacular job with The Messiah and Water Music and M's Horn Concerti. At this price, these discs should be in everyone's ... Read More
