Stated simply, this is the grandest cycle of Beethoven symphonies available.Don't let other reviewers make you think that the sound is terrible. It is not.I am very picky about what I listen to,and the minor imperfections in this set cannot come close to comparing with the positive aspects. This set has (in my opinion the best version of the 1st and 8th I have ever heard).I hope all that purchase this set get one tenth of the enjoyment out of it that I have.

I bought on release in the 1950's a black vinyl (on EMI) of The first of the Brahms Symphonies with Toscanini and NBC SO, and hoped that by ordering this set of the four, I would be getting a remaster of that volcanic interpretation. But reading the reviews, I couldn't work out whether the performances dated from the 1930's or 1950's, and whether they were recorded in Carnegie Hall or in a studio. If from the later period, they offer one of music's mountaintop experiences

I like that Toscanini conducts these pieces relatively quickly. It makes both symphonies more dramatic. The sound quality is muddy and may actually be mono. There is a background hiss to it, as well. Toscanini recorded these symphonies on VJ Day and VE Day, which adds to the value of them. I just wish the sound were better.

These are two of the best recordings ever made of these works. The sound is excellent, even in the live recording of the Tchaikovsky, made in 1943. Highly recommended.

I wrote my doctoral dissertation on William Kapell (we share the same school, and my teacher was a student of his), and to still see the outpouring of admiration and love for Kapell's art is still very moving for me.

Heifetz was known as "the King of violinists" and called "God" by Perlman. On these recordings, it is easy to see why.

These are historical recordings, made in 1939 and 1940, but have been restored brilliantly and Heifetz's playing is indescribable; at least by me, check out the review on the Gramophone site.

The sound on the solos is excellent; of course there is some background hiss and popping, but it is minimal and should definitely not deter anyone from this masterpiece.

This is a near priceless reproduction of the first two live Television Concerts, the all-Wagner performance of March 20, 1948 and the performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 on April 3, exactly two weeks after the Wagner concert.

The Wagner concert is great, including the thrilling and intense Ride of the Valkyries to conclude, yet the shining star on this DVD is the Maestro's performance of Beethoven. It is intense in the first two movements, peaceful while brisk in the Adagio movement, leading up to the glorious "Ode to Joy" theme. The opening movement is very fast, only 12:55, and scorches just about all contemporary and subsequent readings of this movement. At this pace, though, Toscanini conducts the climactic passage perfectly, with nearly unsurpassed fury and intensity which would make the ... Read More

The movie for which these extractions provided the soundtrack was indeed quite interesting. Sadly, it's now unavailable. Gould has achieved a cult status unlike that of any classical musician since Caruso or Paganini. Unfortunately, he devoted his considerable talents to the performance of music for which he was particularly unsuited psychologically, on an instrument equally unsuited to the music.
Thomas Bernhard, an Austrian, has written an insightful novel, titled The Loser, which probes Gould's obsessive/depressive personality. I strongly recommend it to devotees of the Gould cult.

Leopold Stokowski was one of the three or four greatest conductors of the 20th century, and quite possibly THE greatest. The performances presented on this CD were originally presented on LPs and, thus, have long been unavailable. They have only recently been made available on this remastered CD by the joint and loving efforts of Cala Records and The Leopold Stokowski Society (of which I am a member). The Liszt Hungarian Rhapsodies are quite pleasant bonuses, but the major work on this CD is Stokowski's magnificent performance of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony -- the finest performance of this masterpiece I have ever heard. If you are one of the many people who love this great symphony please get this recording of it while it is still available. It is one of the dozen or so greatest performances of any work I have ever heard. ... Read More

Those of us who were fortunate to SEE as well as hear pianist Vladimir Horowitz perform in concert will long remember the quiet, nervous, and rather timid man who slowly walked on the stage. When I saw him at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland in 1978, he hadn't played on the West Coast in many years. Actually, Horowitz was absent from concert halls for years, only making recordings, either for RCA Victor or Columbia.

His Oakland appearance was recorded by RCA and portions of the concert were included in the commercial releases; the engineers would take the best from various performances and cleverly edit them together to give a strong performance. Actually, Horowitz was absolutely dazzling once he sat down at the piano. Despite the initial tentative appearance, he really came to life when he began to play. He ... Read More
