Just wanted to chime in with many of the other reviewers and say the sound quality on this CD is absolutely horrible. Seriously, it REALLY sucks. At least after reading these reviews I know why it sucks so much. Buy this only if you're a hardcore classical fan who can pick out and appreciate the supposed wonderful nuances of this particular recording. Otherwise see if you can find the "uninspired" remake from the 80s. That one sounds awesome.

I can only add a little story to the other glowing reviews. I haven't become a great Verdi fan so far, though I've heard and watched quite a bit of his work. I love all sorts of other opera, from Monteverdi to Janacek and beyond, but not Verdi...until I heard the Don Carlo track from this new CD. When I first heard it, this singer and this orchestra somehow revealed the music of Verdi to me. I think it's because there's no bombast, no overacting, no wailing or shouting. Pape's power and skill allow him to simply sing, though I'm sure actually doing so is not so simple. I hope I can use the insight provided by Rene Pape to help me unlock more Verdi now.

This is an excellent CD to introduce yourself to Segovia or to have a nice collection of many of his better works. The Guitar is well recorded given the era in which it was recorded. Highly recommended!

If your not a huge fan of classical music but want the stuff found in mainstream movies, get this album.

I'd say for the most part, if you like the classic sound and style of Emerson, Lake and Palmer (with the angelic vocal melodies and interesting keyboard playing and drum work) this is a pretty good album. However, it's a mellow album for the most part, and lacks some of the more intense moments of the band that can be found on the debut and Tarkus albums (which are masterpieces). It can drag at times, and it adds up to a bit of a mixed bag of an album in my opinion. While the classical influences are nice, and the way the music sounds like it's being played live in front of a classical-loving audience is interesting for a rock band (and influential, I believe) the actual music is just very good, but not as pleasing to me personally compared to the debut album and Tarkus.

I love this record. I've always loved "Pictures" but never owned a copy. When I found it was available on SACD, I had to get it since it's the best consumer distribution format I've ever heard. The recording was great in its day and still holds well over many more "technologically advanced" recordings. Really, the most of the best classical recordings are done with 2 or 3 microphones and a stereo or 3-track tape recorder. My one peve with this album is that they used some pretty heavy digital noise reduction which saps some of the life out of the string section. The horns are still clean and clear though and the percussion is as it should be. The recording really didn't need much (if any) noise reduction really as it was so clean in the first place but for some reason the engineers felt obligated ... Read More

It is difficult to put into words how much I enjoy this music. While I realized that this had been recorded in the 50's and I was prepared for some background noise, what I received instead was a kind of majesty and purpose that is difficult to find today in an orchestra or its conductor. There is no doubt about the glorious interpretation of this music and the orchestra is likewise single minded. I freely admit that I purchased this CD realizing that my only copy on digital vinyl left me tied to my listening room at home. I also freely admit that I purchased this with the intent on revenge against the Mustangs playing what passes for music these days, a cacophony of filthy lyrics and vulgar pounding. Although I'm happy to have the music, I'm a little disappointed with the quality of the re-mastered CD. The newer recordings have so much more depth. I'll choose more carefully next time.

I was hoping to find some nice calming, relaxing music to play in my classroom and home. This was a little too instrumentally loud.

I love Halloween, I love Mannheim Steamroller. But I don't love this album. Mannheim Steamroller is perfectly suited to Christmas music but they just don't get spooky right. Take a pass on this and buy another one of their Christmas albums instead.
