A bit of (russian) magic... Unusual, extraordinary, outstanding. I might be a fan of rock, pop, RnB, electro, etc... This is unquestionably my favourite CD. Ðîññèÿ, Õîð Êðàñíîé Àðìèè, Ñïàñèáî îãðîìíîå.

It is difficult to put into words how much I enjoy this music. While I realized that this had been recorded in the 50's and I was prepared for some background noise, what I received instead was a kind of majesty and purpose that is difficult to find today in an orchestra or its conductor. There is no doubt about the glorious interpretation of this music and the orchestra is likewise single minded. I freely admit that I purchased this CD realizing that my only copy on digital vinyl left me tied to my listening room at home. I love this record. I've always loved "Pictures" but never owned a copy. When I found it was available on SACD, I had to get it since it's the best consumer distribution format I've ever heard. The recording was great in its day and still holds well over many more "technologically advanced" recordings. Really, the most of the best classical recordings are done with 2 or 3 microphones and a stereo or 3-track tape recorder. My one peve with this album is that they used some pretty heavy digital noise reduction which saps some of the life out of the string section. The horns are still clean and clear though and the percussion is as it should be. I read it in a magazine a few months ago that there were two musical instruments, which had a particularly good influence on a human body. Solo harp and solo violin create unique sound waves. I also found out that almost all of the harpists are long-livers. I like classic music but I am not sure I heard solo harp before. I decided to buy this CD not only for my `soul' but for my `body' too. I really enjoy this CD. It contains pieces by my favorite composers (F.Liszt, M.I. Glinka, F.Chopin). The music is very calm and pleasant.

I bought this for my wife who is a horn player and she says it is GREAT. She gets lots of enjoyment from listening to it and highly recommends this to anybody who enjoys horn music or just wants some fun and exciting music.

I heartily agree with the Amazon review by Stephen Wigler. I recently listened to the famous Richter 1958 recital featuring Pictures and two Pictures renditions by Horowitz (1947 & 1951). All three of these Pictures are recommended in my what to buy next CD book. There is no DDD recording recommendation, but the book does mention my VOX 1955 Brendel LP. I have the above recordings on vinyl LPs and digital disc. Getting back to basics, a recording should preserve as close as possible the performance so that those who were there would be guessing, "is it live, or is it Memorex." None of the above even remotely does this by today's standards. I love Kissin's performance much more than any of the above and the recorded sound on it is simply dazzling.
