Of three Qatsi movies, my favorite is certainly, Powaqqatsi because it is not just a gorgeous movie with amazing images; it is one of very precious experiences that happen rarely in life. What made this experience possible is above all and without doubt the MUSIC. It was not the first music by Philip Glass I heard. I like his minimalistic and somehow disturbing scores that go right to your senses for "The Hours", "Notes of the Scandal", and "The Illusionist" (2006). Powaqqatsi was the second movie in Reggio's "Qatsi" trilogy for me. Just before it, I saw "Koyaanisqatsi" (1982) or Life out of Balance", the first of three Reggio-Glass movies. I like "Koyaanisqatsi" very much but I think it is the images that make it so memorable. "Powaqqatsi" for me, is about Glass's magnificent, un-earthy, divine ... Read More

Not many opera singers could have pulled off the feel of this recording. Hampson is one of the few. He sings with sensitivity to the style and the message Foster's music offers.
There are two areas of fine variety. First, in the mix of familiar and unfamiliar Foster songs. And Hampson's diction is so pure that the lyrics of the unfamiliar are easily understood. Second, in the difference between the ballad-type and the more robust. Hampson sings the ballads with a much lighter tone than we hear from him on the operatic stage. And there are numerous examples of an exceptional head voice.
I must differ with reviewer A Customer, who said that the accompaniments "fail to convey the importance of the rather formal parlor song." Accompaniments are intended to support and complement the vocal artist, ... Read More

Thomas Hampton does equally well on the operatic numbers as he does on the Stephen Foster numbers in expression and style. A wonderful recording.

This CD is a grab bag, but a very special one. It contains five choral works, garnered from fairly recent recordings on the Koch and MusicMasters labels, sung and played by exceedingly sensitive musicians and led by surely the best Stravinsky conductor we have, Robert Craft. These are among the best recordings I've ever heard of these works.

Probably the most important, and certainly the best known, work here is placed last: the Symphony of Psalms, with the Simon Joly Chorale and the Philharmonia Orchestra. This performance very much emphasizes that the work is for chorus with orchestra, not an orchestral work with incidental chorus, and it is generally gentler than most performances one hears. The Simon Joly Chorale is simply sensational here, with subtle inflections and dynamics, clear diction and impeccable intonation. ... Read More

I'm a huge fan of Philip Glass and have collected many of his works, listening to them frequently. As a writer by trade, I generally find his compositions unobtrusive (and often complementary) to my working process. However, I was sincerely disappointed when this arrived in the mail. I had thought I was purchasing an album containing music and nothing else, when in fact it is essentially an abridged version of the film in an audio format.

I guess I should have listened to the sample audio on the page. But I was fooled by the word "soundtrack"--in the Amazon title. Isn't a soundtrack usually music from a film?

The music is certainly there and it's wonderful (if you're a Glass fan), but throughout the entire CD it plays exclusively--except for one two-minute track--as background to the voices of those being interviewed. ... Read More

I don't think this recording deserves One Star ratings or that the artist deserves such crude bashing. And re: Hampson's eye-colour.... Uh, these aren't lenses? He has blue eyes. I met him many times and...indeed, they are dark blue.

Anyhow, this is what Hampson is focusing on right now, American song. While those aren't exactly my thing I have to say that he sings them beautifully. I wish he'd stick to that rather than heavy Verdi and Wagner which his voice isn't right for.

French Lt.'s Woman is the best piece on the cd the rest is disjointed at best.

The French Lt.'sWomen is very slow and very powerful. If you don't get

a choked feeling in your throat.....you probably voted for Bush.

This one selection is worth the entire CD

Finally, THE THIN BLUE LINE soundtrack by Philip Glass has been released with the beautiful music only (i.e. without the dialogue tracks). Those of you who have seen this gripping documentary by Errol Morris and enjoyed Philip Glass's hypnotic compositions probably bought the original CD release which included dialogue excerpts from the movie. You were probably disappointed because, although the dialogue version sends an important message about the ever-present risk of gross miscarriage of justice and the potential to send innocent men to death row, you were nonetheless deprived of enjoying this incredible, soul-stirring music. This is truly one of Philip Glass's best soundtracks along with KOYAANISQATSI and POWAQQATSI.

Now is your chance to buy this musical masterpiece without the distraction of dialogue. If you are like me, you might ... Read More

Wicked smiles, lascivious winks, histrionic fear, sardonic humor...Pierrot Lunaire!

This is the recording to get, whether you are an initiate or veterna of Schoenberg's music. This cd brings out every nuance, and the recording quality is just intimate enough, without sacrificing the alternatingly spacious moments of the composition.

Buy this rendition before any other.

10.The Flute Album from: Essay

Music : The Flute Album
This album is packed with flute blockbusters, but the flutist does not live up to the greatness of the music. His tone is often fuzzy and I don't agree with a lot of his interpretations. On the plus side, the recordings are well mixed so you can always hear the flute. This is a good CD for the wide sample of great music.
