A terrific album by a great singer. This album represents the considerable territory that Kiri Te Kanawa covers in here repertoire. She moves easily from Handel to Puccini to Jerome Kern. The insertion of classic show tunes as a part of this CD is a nice little plus. Some opera stars absolutely kill popular music by overwhelming it with operatic technique (listen to Richard Tucker singing "What now my love"; this is a pleasant little tune, but it can't stand up to Tucker's voice of steel, using all the power at his command). Te Kanawa sings these songs, for the most part, nicely and does not overpower them with operatic conventions.

She does a wonderful job on Handel's "Let the bright seraphim," displaying good coloratura technique, as a matter of fact. This cut nicely illustrates ... Read More

This CD is quite a classic, as it is Anything Goes, but in as close to its original form as possible. The other recordings of Anything Goes have been altered significantly with dropped and added songs. This CD also is very much in the classical musical theater style. This seems to be an ensemble piece, with big chorus numbers mixed in equally with love duets, and the occasional ballad. After listening to a few tracks, you will surely have a tune stuck in your head, but the nice thing is none of these are annoying tunes. The singers (save one) are great; the lyrics are decent, although sometimes predictable, and the orchestration is out in full grandeur. I would suggest this for collectors, older listeners, or listeners of the older musicals. This is not one for the newer listeners who are captivated with the likes ... Read More

Many of these prior reviewers complain that the abundance of operas and vocals degrate this compilation. They don't know what they're talking about. These genres are what made Classical music popular in it's age. In that era the forum for showcasing "classical music" was operas! Hence why most of these works are lost in the shuffle. Most of us know Mozart and Beethoven's compositions by ear but there are so many other great composers that existed and these CD's will show you but a PIECE. But, fair warning, these CD's show only a small fraction of the whole movement (song). If you truly dig the genre you're in for a treat, investigate!

I am not particularly a fan of opera but do realize it's merit. I also appreciate the talent of it's artists. This 2 disc set offers a wide, wisely chosen selection from most of the popular operas, performed by most of the world's greatest singers, present and yesteryear. Yes, you will find legends such as Maria Callas to Pavarotti to the up and coming Roberto Alagna and Angela Gheorghiu; sharing space on these discs. Economically, I was able to obtain this set for under ten bucks. My research could not find a more varied set with such a stellar roster at any price. It will impress any novice to seasoned collecter. I wish that EMI annotated the set better, a brief synopsis of each track would have tutorial value. The sound reproduction flows seemlessly from track to track.

I am so glad this CD is still in print. It is a wonderful album of Gershwin songs sung buy the wonderful Soprano Kiri Te Kanawa. Here voice is so versatile she can sing anything. This album is one to put in any ones CD collection. Kiri never disappoints. Every album I get from here is different and I think that is just wonderful. Here voice has not changed a bit she still have the same opera range today as when she recorded this album. Kiri is one of my favourite opera singer, she can sing it all.

The glut of crossover albums that came our way in the ripe era of Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Domingo has abated, leaving not the best taste in the mouth. But there were some high points, and this 1991 Cole Porter collection from Thomas Hampson is a gorgeous example. Like his hero from the 30s, Lawrence Tibbett, who triumphed as much on radio as in the opera house, Hampson sings full out, applying an overtly operatic baritone to popular song. He has such a command of vocal technique that, as with Tibbett and more recently Ben Heppner, the glory of the vocalism would carry the day on its own.

But Hampson adds to this a good deal of finesse, humor, and suavity--particularly the last. "Begin the Beguine" and "In the Still of the Night" convey the cosmopolitan asurance that is a Cole Porter trademark. There are ... Read More

This studio recording of the Lerner and Loewe classic is quite good. In fact, until the Jack Cassidy/Shirley Jones version was finally released on CD, this was by far the best CD available of the score. The singing is very good, the sound quality is excellent, and all the songs are here intact. So is the dance music--all of it. Which brings up one of the problems with McGlinn's studio recreations. He is a fanatic for completeness. He goes overboard with it. At least in this recording he hasn't resurrected songs that were cut out of town as he did for other recordings such as "Show Boat" and "Anything Goes." There's usually a very good reason songs get cut out of town: they don't fit, or they just aren't very good. But I digress. We're talking about "Brigadoon." Here, I think there is just too much of the dance music. ... Read More

Music : Night and Day: Thomas Hampson Sings Cole Porter
Generally, efforts by opera singers to sing popular music are grotesque. Pavarotti, Tebaldi, Sills et al. seem to make music that wasn't that great to begin with sound worse than it is. And generally the voices of the popular stars of Broadway musicals(Fred Astaire, Rex Harrison) are so mediocre that the music they sing seems mediocre too. So what Thomas Hampson (and his expert arranger) have done with these songs of Cole Porter is little short of miraculous: In Hampson's incredibly beautiful voice (one of the voices of the century) and perfectly sympathetic styling, the shape and wit--the genius--of Cole Porter's musical imagination is revealed probably for the first time since they were written. An astounding accomplishment, and a delight to the mind and ear.

Why in the world would I want another recording of Show Boat? I already own a very old Columbia version, called "Here Comes the Show Boat," with Helen Morgan, Paul Robeson, and James Melton, which purports to be an "original cast recording," as well as the movie soundtrack, and the 1962 studio cast.
The answer is Jerry Hadley. Since his untimely death, I have been looking into more of his recordings, especially those outside the traditional opera repertoire.
And I was not disappointed! Not only did I get a great performance from Hadley. I got the added beauty of Frederica von Stade's Magnolia and Teresa Stratas' Julie. Add to that the original orchestrations resurrected by John McGlinn, and you have the closest recording available to the intentions of Jerome Kern.
Some listeners will want the full treatment of the ... Read More
