MONTEVERDI CHOIR AND THE ENGLISH BAROQUE SOLOISTS THE 'STARS' OF THIS RECORDING!!!!!
Johann Sebastion Bach (1685-1750) wrote very little church music after 1730, so it is not surprising that when he produced for Christmas, 1734, an 'oratorio' in six parts he adapted much of it from earlier compositions, mostly from secular odes. Recitatives and chorale settings were, of course, new, but otherwise all but one of the arias and nearly all of the choruses were 'parodies'. The six cantatas of the 'Christmas Oratorio' are designed to be performed on separate days from Christmas to Epiphany, but it does not necessarily follow that they are unconnected. Bach must have composed the work continuously, and there are many, sometimes obvious, sometimes subtle connections between the separate parts. ... Read More

I collected film scores back in the 1990s when epic score after epic score was written to bolster an average film into a 'classic' status. Since James Horner's 'Titanic' in 1997, film studios have been unable to afford some of the marquee composers, and even when a familiar name is used, this dying art has been overloaded with techno music and feeble filler.

James Newton Howard has progressively become one of my favorite composers. His work has gotten stronger over the years, and it has propelled him into the top most-wanted by production studios. Previous achievements have flown under the radar as they were unfortunately attached to a failed film. His work was outstanding on Waterworld and The Postman, though both films were mocked by movie-goers and critics alike. There are others, but I want to ... Read More

I recommend this album for anyone who loves opera, contemporary, pop, and classical music. Although this album was made years ago when Charlotte was just 15, she has since released a hit pop album with a string of hits, had a baby and a hit T.V. variety show, she has recently stated that she's looking into acting again, and getting a role in an opera in the theater, releasing a new classical album, and a new pop album! This record is a great way to get ready for what Charlotte will be hitting us with next!

Most bands that get as heavy as VOM start to lose their creativity throughout albums but, VOM writes so that the listener does not become sidetracked while listening which makes them original in this genre. They are very talented musicians and were just on a tour with necrophagist!I would compare them to Necrophagist because of the low vocals, but VOM loves their off timing breakdowns that Necrophagist does not. Must have album!

At the risk of not being Politically Correct, the London cast, while not bad, is simply not as good as the American cast. It's that simple.

This soundtrack for a movie version of The Merchant of Venice makes for an interesting music album. Without actually having a note of authentic Elizabethan music on it, a medieval atmosphere is created. Contrasting styles and textures seem to immerse the listener and transport one to different places. In addition to the three tracks featuring countertenor Andreas Scholl, track number eight has words by Shakespeare sung by a delightful boy soprano, Ben Crawley.

My main gripe with this, as with most movie soundtracks, is that however well they serve the movie, they do not provide an "even" musical environment for the listener at home. I play music to relax or to match my mood. Because of the variety of styles and textures on this album, there is always something that strikes a jarring note so this CD does not get as ... Read More

I really love this collection of Baroque music! Back in the 1990s, when Naxos was a new company, there was a lot of talk about their recordings not being as good as those of some other music labels, but I believe that Naxos has much improved, and terrific collections like this are testimony to the fact. There's a very nice balance on these CDs in terms of style, types of performers, and in presenting pieces that span the entire Baroque era from about 1600 to 1750. The tempos also balance nicely, though perhaps there's a slight emphasis on slower pieces, so the overall effect on me of hearing this music is peacefulness and serenity, while the etherial choral works add to that sense.

So much of the Baroque music that is performed often - mainly J.S. Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi - is actually from the end of that era, so Naxos ... Read More

Not symphonies in the modern sense, these little works are sinfonias or Italian overtures taken from the many entertainments--odes, operas, and the like--that Boyce penned over the years. They have been charming listeners ever since they were published as a group in 1760 and have always fared well on vinyl and on CD. The current recording is certainly one of the finer ones I've heard, with sprightly, energetic allegros and slow movements that properly emphasize stateliness, as well as Boyce's uncanny gift for melody. The playing by the English Concert is of the highest order throughout.

My only gripe--and it's an important one--is that Pinnock tries to improve on the composer's tempo markings. Now, it's true that with the exception of No. 6, which is bipartite, these overtures follow the fast-slow-fast model of the typical Italian ... Read More
