I bought this recording for the Faure not knowing much more about Durufle than his "Four Motets on Gregorian Themes". What a shock! Never have I heard a more original piece of music than his "Requiem" which is ironic because he bases most of the themes on gregorian chants. The listener can easily tell that Shaw knew exactly what he wanted from his chorus and the orchestra because they follow every little nuance perfectly! The chemistry between musicians and conductor is so apparent, and the french textures and harmonies really wrap the listener in a warm blanket of music. I have heard this recording, another recording of the version with just organ and choir, and I plan to buy the Voices of Ascension version for chamber orchestra. Now, as to Shaw's non-use of soloists: I did some research ... Read More

The selections chosen are, for the most part, to my taste, but the volume is comprised of fewer supurb selections, such as those masterpieces by Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart that were found in Vol. I.

A wonderful album. I have several copies of Handel's Messiah, but the performance of the Hallelujah Chorus by Robert Shaw's singers is exceptional, outstanding. I was inspired to have my young son listen to this album: Verdi's "Dies Irae", Orff's "O Fortuna", and Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus".

Notice that there are 3 versions of "Dies Irae" on this album. It's nice to hear others. I am not normally a fan of Requiems. I will say that I do like Bach's Mass in B Minor and the Kyrie Eleison excerpted here is beautiful.

This is an absolutely beautiful CD of choral music. As one who has been singing in Chorales almost all my life, I am always thrilled when I can find recordings of outstanding and excellent choral music. I purchased two CDs of the Robert Shaw and ASO; one for myself and the other as a Christmas gift to my Choral Director, Dr. Robert Lamb (Doctoral Music Arts in Choral Conducting). Dr. Lamb loves anything done by Robert Shaw and had not heard this one. Although I have not heard of his reaction to the CD as yet, I can say from my listening that everyone who loves choral music, will love this CD. I particularly love the Bach, Handel, and Brahms pieces. Alleluia! Alleluia! Enjoy!

I agree with all the thoughtful comments of the previous reviewer. From start to finish this recording and performance gets A+. There are no weaknesses here. Highly recommended. With the EMI Classics, I have made some purchases that I was disappointed with from an audio perspective. Case in point would be some of the recordings from the piano great Dinu Lipatti - however EMI obviously worked very hard and was successful in conveying the emotional content of Lipatti's performances from the 50's. This recording is no different - the spiritual content comes across with emphasis and on the audio is very balanced. The choir has been captured with great transparency. It's a beautiful sound that transports the listener to another place - great way to switch off and enjoy a very pleasant musical experience.

The original CD release of this collection of Verdi & Puccini arias was a major disappointment. On the CBS label, the sound levels were extremely low, and the depth of the sound field extremely limited. Recorded at a time when Te Kanawa's voice was at it's most glorious, and popularised by the use of two of the Puccini arias in the Merchant Ivory film "Room with a View" (Chi il bel sogno di Doretta (La Rondine) & O mio babbino caro (Gianni Schicchi))the CD release was a major disappointment. Sony have thankfully righted this wrong, and with the use of their proprietory Direct Stream Digital (DSD) remastering, the result is a massive improvement. In addition, as the original CD was a bit on the short side, they have included 5 welcome bonus tracks to bring the total time of the disc to a reasonable ... Read More

I don't know about the BEST ever, but it IS a very good choral sampler. The range of period music, styles, and choruses is a great sampling of choral music, ranging from Gregorian to McCartney; the bombastic to the serene; the familiar to the lesser known. The quality of the recordings (from different times and places) is very good. It would make a good intro to choral music CD, or just a very enjoyable collection of choral works by a wide range of composers. It does, indeed, demonstrate what the human voice in harmony with others is capable of.

I had the original LPs of these recording so I was happy to see that they had been transferred to CD. The performances of these three concertos by Francis Poulenc are the best I have heard. The Concert champetre (1929) was written for Wanda Landowska and was a favorite piece of hers but she never recorded it despite the urgings of Poulenc. This recording of the Concert champetre was made in 1957 with Aimee van de Wiele as soloist, who gives an energetic performance along the lines of Landowska. The Concerto for two pianos (1932) has the composer and Jacques Fevrier as soloists, a combination that could not be more ideal as Poulenc had Fevirer and himself in mind when he wrote the music. The Organ Concerto (1936) is a magnificent work full of wonderful melodies and is played in a 1961 recording by the organist ... Read More

This is a wonderful CD. The Salisbury Organ is in the very capable hands of Organist, Michael Murray. Not only does the CD demonstrate for us the great qualities of the Tuba Mirabilis and 32' Ophicleide, but also the soft string sounds of the organ. A definite must buy!
