Music : Camelot (1960 Original Broadway Cast)
If you follow my reviews you will find that I enjoy newer, less classical musicals usually. HOWEVER, Camelot was certainly a fine listen. The songs are enjoyable and give a nice outline of the show, the singers are pleasant, the lyrics are pleasing and clever. While listening to the two recordings of Camelot I own, I decided that the Camelot: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1967 Film) 1967 recording is better than this one. I came to this conclusion because the singers on that album have more personality which makes the show more real for the listener. I am in no way saying this 1960 isn't good, that one is just better. Fav song: "If Ever I Should Leave You"

Glass was so imaginative to put himself into the mindset of the 19TH century, and to perceive how shocking the introduction of photography must have been. The incessant repetitions, and long slow builds, brilliantly tie together the atonalities, and the screeching "Dorothy's flying monkeys" vocalizations. The effect creates a multiplicity of layers of imagery. It can either be a very exciting work, or an annoying one. If you're working on a sculpture or painting, it's great background. If, at the moment, life is what's happening while you're busy doing other things, it won't be your cup of tea, that day. Such duality of responses is typical of extraordinary art.

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, ... Music : The English Madrigal School
It would be wonderful to see this set in print again. This box set is a compilation of "The English Madrigal, Vols. 1-4" that Alfred Deller and the Deller Consort recorded in the 1950s and early 1960s. For many listeners at the time, this was a first exposure to a "countertenor" (as Deller billed himself--more technically, both he and his son Mark were falsettists of the highest level).

The performances are exquisite. The Deller Consort developed a reputation as being the finest vocal chamber ensemble of its time, particularly when it came to Baroque and pre-Baroque music. The musicianship is simply stupefying.

When one considers that most of these recordings were in mono, the re-mastering becomes even more impressive!

HIGHLY recommended for all connoisseurs of the madrigal ... Read More
