I share the very positive sentiments of the other reviewers. I have heard both of the Boulez anthologies and prefer this one, although the other is excellent too. Compared to the classic Karajan Webern single CD with the same orchestra, which I also admire, the newer Boulez performances of the same pieces are marked by equally fantastic orchestral playing, and even better recording quality, which makes the extreme dynamics of Webern's writing more effective. If there is a better Opus 1 by any composer than Webern's Passacaglia, I would like to hear it. The Schubert and especially Bach arrangements on the first CD are first class. In my view, all the performances are successful - with special kudos to the soprano Christiane Oelze and the Emerson String Quartet. The documentation, in substance ... Read More

'Edgar' is Puccini's second opera and, as in his first opera 'Le Villi,' it is hampered primarily by its clumsy and outlandish plot. Nonetheless it represents a major advance in Puccini's ability to write music that is apt for the situations depicted by the words and there are ample evidences of what later came to be considered Puccini's musical fingerprints--brilliantly illustrative orchestration, frequent pentatonic melodic outlines and harmonies, underlining of melodies by lush string writing, memorable arioso-like recitatives, soaring melodies. One hears the influence not of Verdi so much as Ponchielli here, although there is one instrumental passage that sounds for all the world like it was cribbed from 'Falstaff'; one wonders if it was added in Puccini's 1892 revision of the score. Possibly ... Read More

At last, thanks to Zephyr label, we have a chance to hear John Philip Sousa's "El Capitan March" with the words that belong to the music. In short, we finally have a definitive recordings of the complete (dialogue and all) operetta (Z110-97-2), faithfully and painstakingly restored after "extensive research last more than ten years, and past experience in restoring three other Sousa operettas"-as the notes tell us. It is nowhere near Gilbert & Sullivan at their best, but that does not mean it is not good. This bit of fluff is a delight from start to finish, now and then indistinguishable from Victor Herbert or Sullivan on a bad day, and with lyrics miles inferior to Gilbert or even Larry Hart. But why quibble? It is a product of its time and a piece of American musical ... Read More
