Perhaps it is the romantic in me that enervates a sense of anticipation when superlative musicians take up period instruments to play great master's works in the manner in which they were written.

In this case I believe that also means enjoying the work with a slightly faster Tempi than accustomed.

Beautiful music making for beautiful space.

I haven't heard this performance. I've just ordered it because of the positive ratings and recommendations it's gotten. BUT... I wanted to grab a little preview from the MP3 samples, and what do I find but another amazon snafu. The MP3 takes you directly to the CD of the Robert Shaw Chorale, hardly likely to be of comparable merit.

Sad to say that I'm a worrier, and in this day of global warming and 24 hour cable news tragedies I have plenty to worry about. I come home from work, say hi to the wife and kids and find myself, more often than not, falling asleep in front of CNN and waking up in the wee hours with a terrible sense of where we are all heading. It is after pondering our post-post-modernity and the blank night sky, that I put on this CD and listen to the beautiful soprano voices arc and orbit and progress in baroque splendor through a dark that may or may not be inhabited by the all-good and all-knowing God that so inspired these composers to create such miniature sonic gems. These simple tunes have been part of the fabric of American music for generations as the musicologist Martin Peralman tells us in his superb introduction ... Read More

Many, many aeons ago I participated in the chorus of a University production of Mozart's REQUIEM. One of my friends (who was in the audience) said to me after the performance, "I've never seen you look so happy."

I was...and who wouldn't be?

Participating in a classical chorus always creates an immediate sense of community--even if limited to the run of the show. Participating in a Mozart work--and particularly his REQUIEM--rates as a very special experience.

Not surprisingly I purchased several REQUIUEM recordings over the years since that joyful experience, no doubt in an understandable attempt to keep the happy memory alive.

All of the recordings have been good, but this New Completion by Robert Levine has got to be as good as it can possibly get--short of going ... Read More

If anyone has ever doubted the male human voice as being an outstanding instrument, listen to track #10:

VII. Motet: Duo Seraphim - Christopheren Nomura

It does not get much better than that.

Highly recommended, this has gone quickly to the top of my Sacred Choral CD Collection.

I will not hesitate to say that every disc Boston Baroque puts out there, it should be in your cd library. As usual, Pearlman and his fellow musicians offer rich and exquisite performances of the orchestral Bach, just as they have done with Mozart and Handel. This first-rate disc may cost a little more than others, but it is well worth it.

Founded by Martin Pearlman in 1973, Boston Baroque is the first permanent Baroque orchestra in the U.S. It is also the resident ensemble for Boston University's Historical Performance Program. Boston Baroque's first Telarc recording, issued in 1992, included the first six concertos of Handel's Opus 6 Handel: Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, Nos. 1-6. Fifteen years later Telarc has finally recorded and released the remaining half dozen.

Boston Baroque's recording of the Concerti Grossi Nos. 1-6 was excellent, and Nos. 7-12 are better still. The strings are even more polished (Pearlman doesn't double the string parts with woodwinds, as some other conductors do), and the recorded sound (thanks to DSD) is even more lifelike. Boston Baroque's playing has none of the mannerisms that sometimes mar historically informed performances; ... Read More
