I asked myself when I was buying this my Twelveth recording of Handel's Messiah, why did I want another one? First of all you have Harry Christophers and the Sixteen involved which means a really top notch performance is in store. Second an impressive line-up of soloists. Finally I have to admit I actually happen to really love listening to "Messiah" What we have here is a nice, simplly well sung and played
performance and recording of this work. No weak spots in the Sixteen, no weak links in the soloists, and Harry Christophers knows this work inside and out. This is his second commercial recording of the work, he did the
Mozart arr. for BBC Music Magazine a few years back, and it is a good one too. Its not too many conductors who get the chance to "have another go" at a recording, ... Read More

I am a musical novice. I was brought up listening to Pink Floyd, Santana, Joni Mitchell, and so on. I could not read music to save my life. Then someone introduced me to some Josquin Des Pres Rennaissance Polyphony - Missa L'homme arme sexti toni, Agnus Dei, to be specific - and I was totally hooked.

A few years later, someone introduced me to this CD, and I was even more taken. For some reason, I really like the Perotin-composed pieces - tracks 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9. The Beata viscera (track 8) is other-worldly, and quite possibly one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard in my entire life!

You don't have to be a musical scholar to enjoy this - it's simply beautiful!

The other reviews say it all, although I would add that this is a great album for those just getting into classical or wanting to experience it for the first time. I also recommend this album to all seasoned classical enthusiasts.

Seriously, whether if you have no idea exactly what kind of composer Purcell was, or only plan to buy only one CD of his music (God forbid!), this record will knock you off, in a very pleasant and surprising way. I don't like to write superlatives, but this CD has unanimously 5 stars with non-ceasing praises, and guess what: it is THAT good. So good that is gives a good case for few of those who believes that Purcell was a greater composer than Handel or even Bach! Just listen to "Vouchsafe, O Lord, To Keep Us This Day" (second last track) and be awed; it is comparable to one of the best of Bach's cantata's single movement. If you truly like good music, you cannot afford to NOT have this CD: you will thank me and other reviewers here later, GUARANTIED.

Have a nice day.

I have recently discovered Purcell's music. While singing in choir as a young college student, I sang, "Sound the Trumpet" which I loved and am anxiously awaiting a recording of that piece I ordered off Amazon. During my search, I came upon this recording written on a completely different theme and took interest, since it was loosely based on Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Nights Dream."

The other reviewers have described the format of this semi-opera well and I agree that the music and singers perform fabulously. The only other thing I have to add is that I find music can sometimes be used as a vehicle to relax the mind and even problem solve and I find these works to be that kind of music that isn't too demanding of the listener. You can think, get homework or housework done, or best of all, sit and ... Read More

Obviously I've, joined (by purchasing the recordings) John E. Gardiner's Bach Cantata Pilgrimage and I'm most certainly enjoying the journey. As I have expressed on this board regarding the two previous sets of this series, I'm enthralled in every way with these recordings. This third release (actually Volume 24) is no exception. Simply put, John Elliott Gardiner and his forces therein are stupendous in every way. It is extremely evident that Gardiner has worked very diligently in presenting these works. The results are superb. I own other "complete sets" of the cantatas; however, this new set, so far, really touches my very soul in ways that the other recordings have yet to do. Gardiner's approach has made me, keenly aware, once again, of the cantatas' rich musical beauties--I truly feel that they find dear ole ... Read More

Yes - it's beautiful; but it does have some rubato which to me was unexpected and rather annoying. No doubt it's all very authentic, but still. Deller doesn't do this on his recording and I prefer the tempo his way - traditional. Other amateurs, like me, who love "King Arthur" might find this version occasionally tiresome.

Music : George Frideric Handel: Esther

Esther is the first of Handel's oratorios by a good many years, written when he was 33 and enjoying the patronage of the Duke of Chandos. When he later became his own impresario and was running into trouble as a composer and producer of Italian operas he turned to oratorio as a strategic alternative, but at this early date his concern was to deliver staged entertainments for the Duke, and Esther, contemporary with the work that later gained the title Acis and Galatea, seems to have been just an unusually serious specimen of its type.

As often with Handel, there is no fully official version of the score, and this particular score may not even be fully complete from any point of view. The libretto seems to have been the work of someone in the frivolously named association of big literary figures called the Scriblerus ... Read More

I have listened to this CD over and over again and enjoy it more each time. I disagree that these performances are sub-par in any way. I find the blending of the voices and the music soothing and well done. On more than one occasion I have even been brought to tears.
