Andrew Parrott conducts the Taverner Consort and Players is a very affordable set of discs that allow everyone to experience the 'non-choral' choral Bach. Instead of the usual chorus (even the pared down choruses of 16 - 30 members the way most 'authentic' performances use) the works are assigned to one person per part. The result is light, airy, transparent, and very lovely Bach.

Case in point: for the Magnificat 'for 5 voices, 5-part chorus, orchestra & continuo' in D major, Parrott conducts or rather inspires Emily van Evera, Evelyn Tubb, Taverner Consort and Players, Howard Crook, Caroline Trevor, Simon Grant in a new way to hear this gracious work. That Bach can be interpreted in so many ways gives credence to his importance in musical history. This performance, as ... Read More

The success of this recording lies in the unique presentation of these wonderful works of Handel. In being recorded in the context of a Carmelite Vespers liturgy, the music takes on a new tone that would certainly be lacking in any other recording. Without this context, we cannot experience the music as it was intended to be experienced. I say, experience, for, in this recording, the music of Handel ceases to be mere 'kunstmusik', but becomes true, functional, prayer as well.

Music : G. Charpentier - Louise / Cotrubas · Domingo · Bacquier · Berbié · NPO · Prêtre
LOUISE is an opera that may be known today as a work with only one hit "Depuis le jour" to its credit, but at one time it was a staple at the great opera houses of the world and was reputed to be a favorite of the Metropolitan Opera's Sir Rudolf Bing who could never remember its name and referred to it as "the one with the girls and the sewing machines."

The case for its revival could be strong. It has a moving story. It tells the story of a poet who falls in love with a seamstress set in Bohemian Paris. While it sounds like a LA BOHEME rip off, the occupations of the main characters and the setting are all the two operas have in common. Louise, the main character loves Julian, a poet, but is torn between running off to Paris with the love of her life and her domineering parents who disapprove of their ... Read More

There are apparently two errors on this album: on disc two, track one (All they that see Him, laugh Him to scorn) near 0:02 and 0:04. I verified this using two brand-new (and not scratched) copies with CDex in "paranoia" mode. They are audible as 'skips' in the sound with every CD player I've tried. I have been trying in vein to contact EMI/Virgin about the problem. If you can live with it, this is otherwise a very good Messiah. If you believe you have an error-free copy, please contact me at clumma at yahoo dot com.

This is a light-hearted and crisp performance of these pieces. Granted this music is not terribly complicated; it often seems, if not predictable, then instantly familiar and occasionally schmaltzy. We can probably forgive Haydn this, as he wrote some of these pieces when he was only 12! The soloists are smooth and not pushy and the choir's diction and timing are razor sharp. They positively bounce and soar through the music, and this is great stuff to crank up on your car stereo (watch your speed though, as you are bound to get carried away [this is the voice of experience talking]).

There are a few reasons why I can't give this recording 5 stars. For some unnecessary reason the Kyrie in the Grosse Orgelmesse moves at the speed of treacle. Perhaps it is slow so as to counteract the almost manic ... Read More

This cd contains masses of several relatively unknown 17th century composers (baroque era) with settings for full chorus, orchestra, trumpets and drums. Absolutely excellent music, very stirring, very breath-taking. Very highly recommended for the baroque music lover.

When I purchased this 5-disc set by Andrew Parrot, I had failed to notice that this recording is at the minimum-setting of Bach recordings. No choir, but one individual voice per vocal part. Now normally, I like a nice big full choir sound, so before listening I had some doubts as to this recording would appeal to me.
Well, I must say, now that I've listened to it a couple of times, it's really a wonderfully pure effect, and I really DO like it. The sound isn't bleak at all, and at times the four interacting voices do sound like a small choir. I really do not know what Bach's original intentions were, but this recording is really a joy to listen to, and that's what counts most for me.

Music : Handel - Messiah · Israel In Egypt / Taverner Choir & Players, Parrott
As a chorister who has sung Handel's Messiah numerous times, I have come to love this work, and have become very fussy about the way I need it to sound in order to enjoy listening to it.

This recording was recommended to me by a friend who is also an expert on Handel, after I gave him my list of criteria:

* The alto section in the chorus must be female. I know that in Handel's day the alto line was most probably sung by counter-tenors/male altos, but there is an edge to the male alto sound that I just don't like, so no male altos for me!

* The pace of the piece mustn't drag. I have another recording, and when I listen to it, am always feeling like I need to wind them up to get on with it... slow and ponderous... this recording has an appropriate spring in its step, which I appreciate.
