Perhaps it is the romantic in me that enervates a sense of anticipation when superlative musicians take up period instruments to play great master's works in the manner in which they were written.

In this case I believe that also means enjoying the work with a slightly faster Tempi than accustomed.

Beautiful music making for beautiful space.

The violinists are not as virtuosic as Fabio Biondi. The concerti are not as iconic as The Four Seasons. But this is glorious music, full of invention and variety, and on this disk Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra acquits itself as well as any European ensemble.

I completely agree with the other reviewers who cite these performance as amongst the best of these pieces. Thomas Crawford and the orchestera play with a grace, lightness, beauty of tone, enthusiasm and love that's both infectious and unusual. And the soloists are all fine, all playing on instruments reconstructed from period models.

Special mention has to go to the unique version of the clarinet concerto. Soloist Eric Hoeprich reconstructed Mozart's original performance version for the bassett clarinet, and went so far as to build his own bassett clarinet based on an engraving of the one played by the concerto's original soloist, Anton Stadler. Not only does Hoeprich's instrument sound gorgeous and mellow, it permits him to play several passages an octave lower than we are used ... Read More

Music : Mozart: The Complete Wind Concerti
This is one of the best collections of Mozart's wind concerti played on original instruments. Thomas Crawford's Orchestra of the Old Fairfield Academy plays with beauty, gorgeous tone, transparency, grace, enthusiasm and apparent love of the music. The soloists are without exception excellent, and play either on original instruments or (more commonly) on instruments reconstructed from period models. Sandra Miller does a wonderful job on the flute concerti (playing with a sweetness and love unusual in performances of these pieces), as does Marc Schachman on the oboe concerti and Dennis Godburn on the bassoon.

But special mention has to go to the two unique concerti groups in this release: the clarinet concerto and the horn concerti. For the clarinet concerto, soloist Eric Hoeprich reconstructed ... Read More

Music : Bach: Mass in B minor
After getting my hands on Joshua Rifkin's Mass in B Minor I spent one evening comparing it with the Andrew Parrott recording I purchased earlier. I must say I do agree with what I've read about it, and to some extent Parrott's recording is "better". The conducting certainly seems more confident, more spirited at times and the balance of the solo instruments sound better. (then probably thats to the credit of the sound engineer)

However there are some bits of Rifkin's recording I prefer over Parrott's. For one thing I prefer the vocal performers of Rifkin's. Julianne Baird's singing is so lovely and sublime, her Laudamus Te totally beats Emily Van Evera's rendition. The latter seems to be consciously trying to do the vocal ornaments whereas the former just sings the music.

The Bach Ensemble ... Read More

Music : Mozart: Three Quartets
The oboe soloist, Marc Schachman, is not very good at all. He sounds constantly one step behind the rest of the group and misses far too many notes for a profession musician. There are plenty of good historical performances available on the oboe (try Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra's recording of the Mozart oboe concerto) but this is not one of them. The clarinet quartet, a transcription of a violin sonata, comes off pretty well but there's also a smoother recording by L'Archibudelli out there (and it doesn't stand up as one of Mozart's more important works). The string quartet (one of the so-called "Prussian") is quite fine, as the string players are pretty strong. Since the general quality of the recording is relatively poor, however, you might as well get Quatuor Mosaique's version and ... Read More
