This is an excellent CD to introduce yourself to Segovia or to have a nice collection of many of his better works. The Guitar is well recorded given the era in which it was recorded.

Highly recommended!

Everything about this CD is absolutely first rate. From the other reviews you cannot doubt the musically perfect pitch, wonderful voice of Fernando Lima, but I must also highlight the perfect muscianship of the production including wonderful flute, piano, etc..It is not often where a singer can 'share' the production equally with first rate muscians and neither ever over-shadow the other!----This is a quality production rarely produced in the states anymore. Even folks who only like opera may love this, but it is best suited to the 'classically diverse' listener.----A feast for the ears!---- Fernando, please hurry on your next production, please, and thanks!!

Having listened to this CD I though it was outstanding. As a John William fan myself, I always find his technique absulutely brilliant and some of the tracks on there I haven't heard before, which is a bonus. I have quite a few CD's of him playing solo and together with Julian Bream. Also the group Sky he was with back in the early 1980's. This CD I have to say has got to be the best one yet in my collection of John Williams CD's.

I would recommend this CD to all John Williams fans. All so, this CD is genuine and is not a copy from the real thing, which is nice to know. So at least you know what you are buying is worth it's value for money.

It's a good CD for background soft music to enhance the atmosphere of the evening of romance.

As a violinist who has occasionally been known to utter things like "Oistrakh is God!" I am very happy to see this collection come out and I may well pick it up, even though I have almost all the recordings on vinyl. But a few words of caution might be in order, given what I can glean from the track listings and the review that lists the performers and tracks more thoroughly.

First I should say that there are many great recordings here. The Cluytens/Beethoven Concerto is certainly up there with the greatest recordings of this piece, as is the Brahms Double with Szell and Rostropovich. And no one plays Mozart better than Oistrakh; the set is surely worth owning for the Mozart concerti alone. His EMI recordings of the Khatchaturian and Shostakovish #1 concerti are the definitive versions of those ... Read More

"Always pleasant, never a false cord." That's what I think each time I listen to this collection. I guess I should be listening more closely, but I find the music and the virtuosity with which it is played to be a springboard to other thoughts and activities. I can read with it in the background, write with it or simply drift into thought. And that is really quite enough for me.

These are bad times for the world at large - as I write, the US financial system is threatening a giant systemic collapse, the US are mired in Irak and Afghanistan, with Russia occupying half of Georgia a new Cold War is looming large, Chinese babies are dying by the hundreds from poisoned milk, Iran and Korea won't be stopped from becoming nuke, and Paris Hilton is off her medication again - but these are great times for the music lovers and buyers of CDs (are there many of these left?). Now EMI is releasing these gigantic boxes with the complete EMI recordings of such and such, and at prices so low they are tantamount to steals. This one cost me less than 3 dollars per CD, postage included, and it's even cheaper now on the marketplace, three months later. A complete Karajan is out (88 + 72 CDs in two boxes and I've just ... East meets West? The title indicates an homage to the historical recording made in 1966 by Menuhin and Shankar, "West meets East" (West Meets East: The Historic Shankar/Menuhin Sessions). In my review of that disc, I commented that the title was appropriate, as it was "more a case of the Western instrument and player trying to blend into an alien tradition, than the reverse". With Daniel Hope, despite the reversal of the title, you don't get Eastern composers or instruments trying to blend into a Western tradition - Japanese Buddhist monks playing Elvis Presley, Parsifal on a gamelan orchestra? - but rather an exploration of some points of encounter between Western and Eastern musical traditions.

On the one hand you get the very same pieces that Menuhin and Shankar played together, both on that 1966 disc (Swara ... Read More
