I was not expecting a Lucinda Williams disk so soon after 'West' was released. I didn't even know 'Little Honey' was coming until I stumbled across a review in a Sunday paper a few days prior to its release date.

Unlike many, I really liked 'West', save a few songs. I thought it had some unique elements for a Williams disk. It was supposedly her 'sad' album, as opposed to her 'angry' album or this one, which people are calling her 'happy' disk. Whatever.

Williams sings with such conviction on any of her releases, that I don't really go for the emotional labels people & reviewers insist putting on her.

But I will say - after a month or so of playing, this disk is not grabbing me. Not entirely. It has its moments, but all of her disks have moments ('World ... Read More

I'm really baffled by the great reviews of this record. Williams' voice is horrible. It's not that her voice is unpolished; Dylan, Steve Earle, and many others pull off less than perfect voices by the strength of their delivery. Williams tries too hard to sound soulful, ending up sounding desperate, grating. The melodies are flat and uninteresting, and the lyrics are uninspired. Skip this and pick up a Steve Earle, or Blue Rodeo CD for some great "American" music.

After listening Lucinda Williams' album West I became an instant fan and bought a couple of more CDs right away.
Car Wheels on a Gravel Road was nearly as good as West but somehow Sweet Old World appeared to be a bit too easy peace from an artist with this kind of talent. Lucinda Williams can do better.
Don't get me wrong. Sweet Old World is not a poor album. On the contrary. But many of the songs are just beautiful "traditional" tracks without the soul tearing spices of songs on album West.

This was good but West is still the best.

I love, love, love the song "Righteously," but cannot listen to it because of that horrible, harsh guitar. It is at odds with the sweet, sexy feel of the song, Lucinda's vocals and the engaging lyrics. Sounds like a musician who is in a musical mid life crisis, selfishly playing heavy guitar licks because he misses his youth, not because it supports the song. Pettibone is a master guitar player, someone should reign him in so he adds to Lucinda's great work, rather than makes it unlistenable.

Great CD. I bought it for my husband, he's always been a Fats fan and he loves it. All the artists did a wonderful job. Worth every penney.

I saw Lucinda at Bumerbershoot in Seattle this summer. It was at Memorial Stadium, which is a bad place for live music (accoustically), but the song Essence just blew me away. Quickly it has become my summer of '08 theme song. I'm an old fart, and I like every kind of music, but she seems to have the ability to hit that bluesy nerve right smack dang hard and sexy too. Makes me want to do a little dance with a shady woman in a smoky honky tonk. Gonna have to review her entire song book on Itunes and make my own LW's greatest hits CD ... definitely going to include that Drunken Angel song too.

I have been trying to listen this album for some time but it's intolerable.

I listen to Lucinda constantly, have for years, she is a wonderful and soulful artist, I certainly dig her whole style and groove but this performance is just depressing so out of my life it goes. It really upsets me to hear her sounding so bad, it is puzzling how this performance was so bad and why it was released! We should have been spared this.

This little-known early album showcases a much more country, much more raw Lucinda Williams. It is not as great as her follow up self-titled album or Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, but it is very good in its own right and has some great songs, particularly the title track, Lafayette and the original, faster version of I Think I Lost It, which she re-recorded on Car Wheels.
