Simply put, for its value this is one of the greatest collections of CD's of utter joy and happiness around.

This multivolume set covers the early music and musical peak of the musical and comical link between Bert Williams and Louis Armstrong (LJ's dad was a friend of Bert's and used his records to inspire his son, and Satch was a mentor and occasional collaborator with LJ) and the first generation of R&B rockers (Ray Chalres, the Godfather, B.B. King, and Little Richard have all sang their praises to LJ).

Some of his really rare early music is found on the early discs. It took him a while to find his style of humorous stories told to a beat and inspired sax playing, but there are still some diamonds in the rough here. "Swinging in the Coconut Trees" is an amusing ... Read More

Compile,compile,compile...taskmaster Elwood must have those little elves up at the North House digging deep to ready these Blue Jingle Jewels to come on down that chimmey.Eleven different record labels serve as source, with seasonal selections starting far back in 1925 and turning thru till 1995.Throughout the jovial journey wandering amongst alumni credited with many a cornerstone Christmas crafting is encouraged. Hopefully you`ll too find some lost YULEtidings to X with certifiable seals of favorability.~~Merrily Mix~ 2% , 3# , 4#1\2 , 5$ , 7$ , 8# , 9#1\2 , 10# , 11$ , 12#1\2 , and 15# ~~ Post Script: The House lost a golden opportunity for further listener enrichment with lame liner notes. It's easy to see in what high regard the industry holds Louis Jordan simply by scrolling through this site and seeing the wide variety of CDs covering his music, and from a diverse collection of distributors: MCA of course, given that his entire hit recording career was spent with Decca, as well as Universal, Jazz Archives, Blue Note, Verve, Melodie Jazz Classic, Epm Musique, Delta, Proper Box, and Jsp, to name just a few. The ideal purchase, of course, would be the multi-cd anthology from Bear Family of Germany, but not everyone can afford that set.

This one from the U.K.-based Jasmine outlet is as good as any of the reasonably-priced volumes currently on the market when it comes to originals of his hit singles [he had 57 on what then passed for the R&B charts between 1942 and 1951, ... Read More

7.Rock 'N' Roll by: Louis Jordan

Music : Rock 'N' Roll
After a brief and commercially unsuccessful stint at ALADDIN records, Louis Jordan moved on to MERCURY, where the full resources of that label were poured into generating some hits for him. Rerecordings of Jordan's 1940's DECCA sides, supervised by Quincy Jones, were made in late 1956. The product of these sessions was indeed rock & roll (thus this album's title). But as had happened at ALADDIN, X and VIK just two years earlier, lightning didn't strike twice for Louis-- sales of his newly polished oldies were less than what was hoped for. One last attempt to rekindle his career was made in August of '57, this time with a scaled-back band, but once again the records met with widespread indifference. Louis Jordan had officially become a casualty of the very music form he'd helped to create: ROCK ... Read More

Its the centennial for the great Louis Jordan (1908-1975) whose influence still can be felt in today's music. The vocalist and his wonderful fan, TheTympany Five, were a bridge between the swing era and jump blues (and rock'n'roll). Songs of his like "Let the Good Times Roll" and Caldonia," remain staples of blues, R&B and noveau swing repertoire. And his music is quite available from a Bear Family deluxe box set of his Decca Recordings, public domain reissues of these same recordings and post-Decca sides. He was also a major cross-over artist and had duets with other pop artists like Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby. For a nice concise biography check out the one written by Bill Dahl on allmusic.com.

Jordan's last recordings were made for the French Black & Blue label back in 1973, ... Read More

Music : Five Guys Named Moe: (1992) Original Broadway Cast Recording
I picked this CD up after watching a snip of "Caldonia" on a Best of Broadway show on DVD. I loved the catchiness of the tune and ordered the CD right away. I am going to do this review as strictly a review of the CD, not the show itself (which I have yet to see in its entirety)

The Good:
1- The entire cast is comprised of excellent, heartfelt singers, as one should expect in a Broadway show
2- The music did not overpower the vocals as is the case in some cast albums.
3- A lot of dialogue was included before the songs.
4- There are a LOT of songs on a single CD, you have over an hour worth of entertainment with your purchase

The Negative:
1- If you have not seen the show, then this comes across as just another blues/soul CD with very little story ... Read More
