Sometimes it's difficult to rate a genre of music that I don't normally listen to. But be rest assured, the quality of musicianship on Strange Weirdos is unmatched. I heard "You Can't Fail Me Now" on the radio before I even saw Knocked Up. For me, this is the flagship piece in the album. Patrick Warren's subtle string arrangement at the bridge is so gorgeous that I rushed out to buy the cd. Now "gorgeous string arrangement" is a phrase that is oft abused, but you won't make that mistake here: the stateliness of the quartet is the core of that which makes perfect unions.

Though "Ypsilanti" (an instrumental) and Strange Weirdos incorporate the same string quartet and similar arrangements, "You Can't Fail Me Now" is the track when everything - lyrics, music, voice, arrangement ... Read More

The songs on the CD Recovery are new recordings of classic Wainwright tunes from about 30 years ago. Even if you know them all in their original forms, these versions are a great pleasure to listen to. Longtime fans will enjoy the solid reworking of these classics. A new fan can appreciate both the great young talent who created these tunes, and the mature musician who is revisiting them from a very different perspective. The label "entertainer" is perfect for this eminently talented and insightful singer-songwriter. If you ever have the opportunity to see Wainwright in concert, don't miss it.

All the mixed up, sloppy beauty of living and dying wrapped up in the heart of an uncomfortable, aging troubador. All the pain that results from having seen the little mysteries of life and them taken away, the loves that outlive love, the mistakes, regrets, furies and resignations, ironies and laughs all wrapped together, cursed and blessed by human emotion and seared by memory.

Dead Skunk was the reason I bought it and it is the best track on the album. The rest is mildly interesting but not outstanding

Full disclosure: I was introduced to Wainwright when I heard "The Swimming Song" on a mixtape. I bought this album shortly thereafter, and I haven't investigated him since. So this review is for folks who are coming to this album from a similar context, not fans who are already sold on Wainwright's style.

Anyhow -- "Swimming Song" is fantastic. The banjo-plucking is top-notch, the melody is an instant winner, and the lyrics swerve between funny and depressing. And none of the other songs on here are as good, although about half of them come close.

Understandable, since the music walks a line between ragged-but-right and just plain ragged. Think Mulswell Hillbillies-era Kinks or The Band, but a bit sloppier than either. Unfortunately, Wainwright's clever lyrics are done a ... Read More

Loudon Wainwright was a wanabee actor turned songwriter, who debuted with this album, in 1970. And what a stack of songs!

Wainwright's first two LPs were acoustic guitar/vocals, and starker than his mid 70's output, which was propelled by 'Dead Skunk.)

Still going stronger than ever, now in his early 60's, and still singing about getting old, I can't help but note that the first line of the first song of his first LP is "In Delaware when I was younger" (he must have been all of 23.)

Wainwright has mixed up comedy, irony and tragedy, tenderness and brutal honesty throughout his career, and if his late material tends more toward the tender and honest, go back to 1970 and check out songs like the brutally sad 'Hospital Lady', or the pull-no-punches 'Four is a Magic Number' or 'Glad ... Wainwright taps into the male mind.He is a bit of an everyman. It isn't always pretty but it's always honest. Listen to "Donations": a guy with a few friends, who pleads with one of them to let the others know when he is gone, and leaves instructions for his body parts. It is both sad and funny; not easy to pull off. The first two songs are bookends:he's alone, he is 53, and he nudges into adulthood(finally and acknowledging that ,yes, he may be the one at fault). The title song is next to last and is defiant but resigned. Again, two emotions that are usually at odds but that he weaves together. A few of the songs, like "Graveyard" where he muses on how we all end up there are a bit sophomoric but don't detract from a great album by an evolving artist(although I would still like a few like "East Indian Princess".)

Excellent live recording of some of my favorites including "Tip that Waitress" and "I'd Rather be Lonely". Includes a good sampling of what makes Loudon an entertaining and funny folk-singer.

Music : Bleecker Street: Greenwich Village In The 60's
It's hard to recapture a place, a feeling, and we all know how strongly Bleecker Street shaped the face of folk and folks all around the world. This collection appeared both as a 4-disk vinyl set and the more common 2-disk CD version. I wish I had the vinyl, but I'll muddle through somehow.

I loved the original music, but this tribute is a wonderful fitting effort. It's hard to come by, so if you see a copy grab it up quick.

My favorites:

My Back Pages -- Marshall Crenshaw
The Last Thing on my Mind -- Cry Cry Cry (definitely a group to listen to)
Since you Asked -- Beth Nielson Chapman
No Regrets -- Curtis Stigers

I heard, and bought this LP at the time it was released. Shortly afterwards someone stole it from the room at the student hall of residence where I was living. I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did. This was a revelation to me, a European, at a time when US singer-songwriter albums seemed to be saccharine or more likely cyclamate sweet. The songs each punch home in their own way and Loudon's sneering dismissal of his lover in Unrequited To The Nth Degree, contrasts with the raw, desperate lust of Crime of Passion and the utter charm of Kings and Queens. It's the best thing he ever did. If Billy Altman dictated his review while sitting down, then his voice was muffled.
