In the best parts of these performances - those mentioned by Tom Lawrence, but I would definitely add to his list "Where shall I fly" - Lorraine's flame burns fully as intensely and penetratingly as on her great Handel recording with Harry Bicket. (In case anyone still doesn't know, Lorraine's two recordings with William Christie are at that level, too.) Hard to find words for Lorraine. No wonder she made her husband think of Rilke: Words still softly give way before the unsayable . . . And music, forever new, out of the most tremulous stones builds in unusable space her house fit for gods.

With the second "new" Lorraine Hunt Liberson recording to be released in the past few months, those of us who still lament her too-soon departure have a blessed surprise in this second Wigmore Hall live recording, of 1999. (The other 2008 release is the marvelous Lorraine at Emmanuel album of Bach and Handel, celebrating both Lorraine and Director Craig Smith.) A great wish of mine, to have Lorraine singing Schumann's Frauenliebe und -leben, has now been realized. Her interpretations, as usual, span the emotional spectrum and dynamic range, and reach into the soul. What else is hiding in the vaults of recording companies? How about the Wesendonck Lieder? Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's story is so touching I was prepared to be seduced by the "Neruda" songs of her husband, Peter Lieberson. Although her voice is as beautiful as ever I found myself not to be as moved as I am when she is singing from the Classical Canon.

If you love Hunt Lieberson, this CD is a must-have. Beautiful articulation, awesome voice, heart-felt emotion to tear your heart out, all with the best technique.

Lorraine Hunt Lieberson was a wonderfully talented mezzo soprano, who dies far too soon. To begin, I can only quote from another reviewer: "And how sad it is to know that this instrument has passed away two days ago [in 2006]. Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson died two days ago in her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico of breast cancer. It is such a huge loss to the opera world, as she is an artist who is still experiencing the prime of her career. The voice is just so beautiful, the tone so pure, that I lament that we can no longer hear any great roles from this artist. She will be missed." Such circumstances leave one with two separate emotions--sorrow for a passing so early and gratitude for having been able to experience her talent. This is one of my (admittedly many) favorites of Lorraine's recordings, and it demonstrates all the fundamental aspects of her artistry. The way she sings Granados, Luna, and Wolf - like no one else - turns entire traditions of singing on their head and makes me hear anew entire genres of music. For example, take the liberal ornamentation in De España vengo. Similar to Kathleen Ferrier's turns in Er, der Herrlichste von allen, but going much further, Lorraine's ornamentation collapses the very distinction between decoration and expression, or between decoration and the melodic line. The ornaments (like so much else in Lorraine's voice and career) come across as tentative and vulnerable and, AT THE SAME TIME, highly virtuosic. What I love about John Adams is how he is able to write melodies that get stuck in your head yet, aren't so poppy that a classically trained vocalist will sound retarded singing them. El Nino as a whole is an extremely effective piece of music. It is both for the casual listener and then critical listener because it is deep but is very appreciable on the surface level too. I would recommend El Nino to anyone who likes John Adams or legit art music of any kind.

This album is an excellent recording of a very big piece of music. The album inspired me to finally upgrade my stereo-music system to a surround-sound system for my family room.

Yes, the playing is lovely, such as it is. But the main thing I was looking for was the piano duet in the Dolly Suite, which is after all music for four hands... not an orchestra. So I should have been more careful. To me it is also played way too fast. Can't recommend this.
