I purchased this recording on a whim. I just wanted to hear Corelli's Cavaradossi since he was considered one of the best. I expected to enjoy Nilsson's singing, but wasn't sure what to expect dramatically. And I've never been a fan of Fischer-Dieskau; I always considered him a fine leider singer, but that's it. Wow, what a surprise! Nilsson is not only a fine singer but a fine actress too. But the real surprise is Fischer-Dieskau; he's one of the finest Scarpias I've ever heard (along with Gobbi and Taddei). He's evil, menacing, and just a downright nasty man! Who knew he had it in him? In fact, this recording is so enjoyable, I put it right up there with my two other favorite recordings; the first Callas recording and the first Price recording. But this recording has some very important ... Read More

Wow! What a voice! This 2 CD set features 40 of Carlo Bergonzi's works. It represents a remarkable portrait of his body of work. The "liner notes" observe that he had a reputation "as a singer of rare refinement, exemplary style, and impeccable taste. . . ."

Some examples of his work:

"Che gelida manina": This exquisite work from Puccini's "La Boheme" is superbly sung. There is, to be sure, an occasional affectation, but his rich, smooth voice renders this a trifling concern. Listen to the power and richness of his voice on such words as "millionaria," "forziere," and "la speranza" (hope I came close to spelling the words right!). What a lustrous voice. . . .

"O soave fanciulla": This duet with Renata Tebaldi (talk about a "dream duo") is exquisite. Bergonzi's rendition ... Read More

The recent released of this Ballo from 1961 is very welcome indeed and
offers many vocal and musical rewards. What can one say about Carlo Ber-
gonzi except that he is perfect - singing beautifully and with rare ele-
gance and intelligence. Cornell MacNeil - perhaps not the most imagina-
tive of singer - has a glorious voice at his disposal and cannot help but
impress. The great Wagnerian soprano Birgit Nilsson has made a few succes-
ful recordings of italian operas for DECCA such as Macbeth and Tosca and
this one - for all its power and laser beam accuracy her voice could also
be surprisingly beautiful and feminine and so it is in this recording.
Simionato and Sathlmann acquit themselves of their respective roles very
well and Solti conducts with flair. The sound is ... Read More

For all the Karajan's Verdi recordings, this one is, IMHO, the best and the most underrated. First we have del Monaco, one of the most successful voices ever in the tile role, still in great shape; Tebaldi totally amazing as Desdemona and Aldo Protti, a singer that I confess was unknown to me, ended up being very competent on the extremely important role of Iago. Karajan is outstanding here and the VPO is on top form, perfectly executing the score with all its drama and romance. This is one of Karajan's recording for Decca with Jon Culshow. As usual, Culshow makes us believe that we are in an opera house. It works exceptionally well in this case. I've heard the Domingo and Myung-Whun Chung recording. All hats off to Domingo, but Myung-Whun Chung is not Karajan and I missed Tebaldi. However, the Domingo DVD with Solti and Te Kanawa is another ... Read More

We must not be to quick to judge Ms. Bartoli's instrument based soley on this recording. She was only twenty three at the time and shows remarkable skill for someone whose voice is, in essence, only about 10 years old. Here she sounds much more like a true mezzo-soprano than she does today, her tone is dark and full--quite different from the light, ringing, bell-like sound that we attribute to her today. She sounds a trifle strained at the top of her register, near B and C, but this is not where the meat of Rosina lies. Her sound is consistant in the troubling middle range and even does a fair job with the low Gs that litter the score. Her natural charm comes through in the scenes of the opera rather than in her solo line. She plays wonderfully with Leo Nucci, the great Italian "working-man" baritone of the 80s, here heard in his prime before ... Read More

Music : Puccini: Tosca
Opera fans will be more than satisfied with this studio recording dating from 1967 starring Birgit Nilsson as the larger than life Tosca, Franco Corelli as her lover Mario Cavaradossi and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau as the evil Baron Scarpia. Everything about this recording comes together with such blissful musical harmony and dramatic integrity that there is no recording that surpasses it, not even the much loved and talked about 50's Tosca with Maria Callas, Giuseppe Di Stefano and Tito Gobbi. This is the Tosca that takes the crown, regardless of the critics' constant bashing of Birgit Nilsson's "Wagnerian or Swedish" manner and lack of Italian fire. Conductor Lorin Maazel, no stranger to opera, delivers a sensational performance with brisk, dramatic tempo which works for this intense opera, suffusing the orchestra (the Academia De Santa Cecilia in Rome) with ... Music : Pavarotti's Opera Made Easy: My Favorite Moments from Tosca
This title is one of the line of cd's put out by the London Records label for its line of 'Pavarotti's Opera Made Easy'. He sampled other Italian operas, like Aida and La Boheme, as well as themes - Opera for Children, Favorite Verdi Selections, Favorite Showstoppers, etc.

This title is one of the better and more varied, especially for a novice listener. The selections showcase a range of singers who have recorded Tosca for London, and the format allows the listener to hear how these different singers sounded in the roles from Tosca. Recommended highly!
